Cat E skippers

Hi All

I bought a boat in March this year but haven’t even used it once as yet due to financial problems but all that is sorted now.

The question I have is this

I went for my skippers license in about 2000 but I never received my license in the post and have lost my paper stating that I did do the license in moving a couple of times.

My problem is that I called the cape asking if they have any records of my license but by the looks of it the guy pocketed the money. His name is Peter Hamilton.

If anybody has his contact details please forward it to me as I would like to speak to him in getting my license. I have been launching a boat from Knysna and Witsand since then and if something had to happen with one of my passengers I would have been in big trouble. Peter Hamilton use to be the safety officer for the Knysna region.

As this is not going to happen I would like to know what are the requirements for a Cat E skipper’s license.

I read in other forums that you need a medical, 4 passport photo’s, and then to do the test.

I have more that the 50 hours at sea as I have been going out to sea since I was 4 years old.

Plus could the people that have done their licenses please post the place/numbers plus the cost.

Could someone please tell me what the requirements for floatation on boats are?

I know that it will be mandatory for your COF as from the start of August

My boat is a 14’ft bass boat. I know you can put in foam but that is massively expensive and are prone to rot then there are sealed bottles. Read on another forum that one guy used pool noodles will this pass? Plus if I put in a bildge pump? Do I still need the floatation?

Any information will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi TimJan

1. I did the theory part of the skippers through a company called Power and sail, 011 869 2608 (Speak to machelle to book a slot and get your handbook). Stephen Hanscombe is the instructor (this guy knows what he is talking about). Cost R980.00. Same cost for Cat C and Cat E.

For the practical, I used Juan Venter 072 670 3070 in Mtwalume (80km's south of Durban) Paid R1300.00. Juan has a lot of experience and i definitely rate as a very good skipper and instructor.

2. As for the launches, we did our 12 launches no sweat, that was the first time for me on the sea. We also used his boat to launch, he teaches how to read the swell, turn away from waves, approach, beaching, launching, how wind affects swell, etc.

3. "skipper training Manual for small vessels" this manual was compiled by Stephen Hanscombe, on behalf of the South African Institute of Skippers.

4. Cat E - Requirements: 4 x ID Photo's, Eye and Lantern Test, Medical, 50 hours - signed off.

I hope this all helps.

Cheers.:
