guys i know this is and old subject but im still having difficulty casting,i need to find a casting technique that i can use from the rocks.....where im confined to small places.I have mastered the "of the ground" cast, but its totally different when you at the surf.Normally when i practise at the dam, there are no grapnel hooks that would grab onto anything or no obstructions, but on the rocks this cast cannot work......does anybody have any advise or video clip i can use for a different cast?:(that would give me distance

Hi Mumro,

Pse can u advise as what distance u are casting now  more or less & what distance u looking to achieve.

There are ways to achieve ones greatest potential, it all comes with technique & the set up of your rig, & trial & error.

Technique can only be achieved by never giving up trying. The more you do the better you'll become. You may try the 2 common effective cast techniques. Loading the reel & loading the rod. Loading the reel is when the angler swings the weight(sinker) away from him/herself, thus adding pressure more to the spool of the reel as the cast is driven forward, also alot of effort have to come from the angler to drive the cast(brute strenght). Loading the rod, allowing  the weight to come to the angler & then driving forward, this works more/less like a non-return clip & swim(locks on a backward movement but releases on a forward movement), this method allows for your rod to flex as the technique lock & load thus reduces the sinker weight on the angler as driving the cast forward(imagine adding in brute strenght).  Theres still other techniques but they are not straight forward to try(difficult).

Rig setup, the thinner the diameter of your fishing line the better/further your cast(leader very important). The sinker weight have to be correctly balanced to rod/reel.

nb.: if your distance attained is about 140-150m theres really no need to go more. although u can.

The best advise from my end, if cannot achieve by yourself, try meeting with someone who can show u more, or go to one of the casting clinics thats held by Tackle shops in Durban, if/when u visit.

hope this helps u

hi,

taking into consideration the weight of your bait, & type of trace used distance may be lost, traces made with the sinker taking the lead is always better for cast.

Water is very deceiving when it comes to ones casting distances, one may feel that the cast was not their maximum, thereafter try immediatly casting on the shore, difference will be noticed(measure if required).

1 methods to increase ones strenght in cast, is to get into a Grey(Dusky)Shark Smash. I usually throw big baits(difficult to get distance), but the Grey still hits u even if u dont make your max. distance. This allows u a continuess chance to throw big baits,  image after all that, throw out a sea-lice, mud-prawn or a chokka mix, all just enough to cover your hook, surely youll feel the difference.

Casting far is not all, its more about finding the feeding zones, sometime one can be casting passed the feeding zone.

the more u cast the better youll become.

Hi Mumro.

I see you from Gauteng. Where exactly?

I live in cresta, but fish for a club in Benoni, REQUIN. We practice every sunday at Blaaupan dam. You more than welcome to join us on sunday mornings and see how to better your casting.

When I joined the club 4 months ago my casting was about 110m. I now cast in the region of about 150m, looking to achieve the 175m mark. Thats off the surf though. Off the rocks I get around 120-130m. It's all about technique.

Let me know if you want to join us this sunday morning. I can always meet you somewhere.

Mohammad

Ps: Feel free to email me at mir@hyflo.co.za

Mumro ... You should try going with Mohammad ... These guys are very helpful. I was there last week and within an hour I improved my average distance by 30m.

I'll probably go again if my work commitments allow it.

Salaamz Siddik Bhai.

Do you mean wife commitments or work commitments....:D.

Let me know when you joining us again. Hopefully Mumro will join us as well.

We should bring the families along one sunday and have a nice braai or picnic.

It was closed from the end of last year till the begining of this year. It's now opened and fully operational.

We use the dam for casting practice and bait presentations, never fished there. I have seen some locals fish there, apparently there's some nice bass in the dam.

Mohammad .... I'm busy on a project and if I want to go to Mazeppa Bay this year then I must finish off on time.

Not a bad idea to bring the family along.... might just take you up on this.

Next milestone is the 150m mark!

HI Munro

I have found some very cool surfcasting video demos and videos of various styles of casting.
Theres a video of a guy that casts 300yds.

Go to www.youtube.com and do a search on surf casting.

Hope this helps

Stanton, most of the videos are of guys using the "off the ground" Pendulum method... which is unsuitable for fishing off SA's coast - usually, it is used from flat beaches, no rocks or steep inclines, because you need the space behind you and to the side... Try do that at St Lucia and you'll decapitate about 35 guys in 1 cast!!:D

It's also incredibly difficult to master, apparently you need a coach to teach you this one...

So reefman what method or style would u recommend. I'm also new w.r.t casting with a freespool and i dont get much distance maybe 50-60m at the most.

the thing is all mu surf stuff is in durban so i dont get much chance to fish with it or practise that much either.

Howzit guy's.

I practice with my club members every sunday at Blauupan dam in Benoni. You's are more than welcome to join us.

The penderlum method of casting is only used to get extreme distances. I use this method and get up to 150m, some of the guys in the club reach 170m.

If you fishing in a crowd like St Lucia, the fish usually play close to shore so you never need to cast to far.

LH, I use the overhead-type-vvvip-moer-en-soek cast, which gets my line wet, but not much more than that :(. I too, am in desperate need of coaching . The reason I speak with authority on that Pendulum cast is because I've tried it... after almost breaking my rod, pulling a few phats, dislocating my hip etc etc - I gave up and went back to my o-t-v-m-e-s cast.
