Casting Technique

Hi guys

What type of casting technique do you use and what type of distance do you achieve?

I have tried all styles and I'm still not getting what I think I should. I'm probably not doing it correctly, so please, any advice is appreciated. I get about 130m max. I really want to go to 150m(although I know you don't always need it).

I know this topic has been kind of discussed before, but the techniques havent been explained clearly enough(hand spacing, sinker drop, sinker position, timing, feet, swing etc).  I'd especially want to hear from the 160-200m guys.  I really want to hear everybody's opinion.  And yes I practice often

Thanx
Marius

I have started to "off the ground" and "pendulum cast" this i havent mastered yet - for sure i am getting more distance and its easier than the "over hand" cast, which i was taught when i was younger. Go look on the site for casting techniques and look on you tube as well, there is loads of info on this site.
Hope you come right, all it takes is practice - its like golf.(i dont play golf)

Hi Marius..the easiest way to get maxium distance is to perfect the basics first. You should look at the 'Off the ground or easy cast' tecnique. This is a basic cast, which if performed right should get you 150m plus..Google 'John holdens easy cast tecnique',it wil show u the proper way of performing the off the ground casting tecnique.Tackle used also makes a difference in the distance you throw with relation to your built..use tackle that you comfortable to throw with.hope this helps

Obviously you wont get 130m when wading,if your casting tecnique from the shore isn't right. When casting you have to use your whole body not just your arms, whilst wading, this isn't always possible.Get some one to record your casting tecnique, then compare it with the method shown on the john holden dvd to see where you went wrong

Hi, I would like to mention something to you. A while back we got a person in who is at the moment a top caster in South Africa. The club brought him in to teach us the finer art of casting and we felt his seminars helped us trememdously. During the casting stage we had quite a heavy wind blowing from left to right across the field. I cast last. My distance was 120 meters. I came second. 130 meters is not a bad cast - remember that. When standing on the beach it always seems as if the guy next to you is casting further than you although it is not so.

We fish 8 competitions per year and never have I met anyone who can cast between 160 and 200 meters. Yes on a good day I reach my 135 meters with some help from the wind from the back. It is also imperative that you understand that when you wade in you cannot get the same velocity and swing which you can standing on the beach and therefore it sometimes is not viable to wade.

I once saw a guy wade in onto a sand bank to cast when his own friends were casting right next to his bait from the beach. Yes it is nice to know that you can cast 150 meters but hey - if you want to get your bait out that far take up kite fishing - just kidding.

I also want you to know that these guys that cast from here to Singapore in competitions uses a rod built only for that purpose - They are like saltwater papgooiers and are totally useless for fishing purposes. They also use fishing line that is probably 0.000005 kg.

130 meters is good!

Howzit Marius, if you watch the guys around you when fishing, the guys getting the pulls are the guys who just lob the bait in or at the right spots. If you want to cast distance, i think is mainly for sliding to get your baits out far and target the steamtrains lurking around. Remember at night too, you don't need to throw here to Aussie for the fish, 10 2 1 they lurking at the doorstep.

Hiya M@rius,

rjthebig is 100% right! Don't get caught up in the rat race of the best tackle and who can cast hundreds of meters.

I have said on Sealine before, my average cast is between 80 - 100 meters for eds. When targeting sharks I recon I could belt an 8oz 130 meters max. I have never actually measured any of my casts and don't intend to judge my abilities by how far I can cast.

My tip is simply that a lazy fisherman catches less fish. The more you plumb and move around, change your baits and experiment the more fish you will catch!

Totally off topic, but

:X Marius, you do know its closed season for shad right ?

Do you get Shad in Fourways? LoL

There was a league compo in Eastern cape last weekend, I shared the rocks at something good with a good couple of club fishermen collecting baits, shad included, since the wednesday before the comp.

Do you guys check what baits are used at these events?:temp:
