Casting advise

Hi  there guys I would like to find out your opinion when it comes to the following:

1.       What is the rule of thumb when it comes to select the correct rod for your height e.g.  Say I am 1.88 m what rod will suite me best 12ft or 13ft.

2.       When it comes to the rod butt what is the ideal length to ensure comfortable and effective casting (e.g. distance and accuracy).

Thanks  ::slr::

Werner, I'm no expert, but from what I read, the best length of rod these days is not THAT important. I would say that a 12' should suit you fine, just as a 10' or 13'.
Whith regard to the butt length, it was said that the width of your shoulders must be the preffered length/width of your grip on the rod. I've read the casting thread under the saltwater section. Somewhere they say that the distance of your hands on the rod, are determined by placing your left hand (thumb on the multiplier reel) at your right nipple and extending your right arm fully. That is if you're right handed. Maybe you could pm one of the regulars in the freshie section if you dont get any response here.

The standard measure used when making a custom built rod for fixed spool casting is as follows:

Hold the rod butt under your armpit and your reel hand extended to a full length grip, thats where your reel seat would be positioned.

Many anglers er in making the butt to reel seat to long thinking they can get more power in the cast.

To convince some clients I let them cast a cast with a shorter reel seat position and then clip the line in on the grinder spool.  I then let them use the same rod but with their much longer grip and see if they can cast to the original line clip

Till now I have only had 1 angler who can cast equally far with a very long grip and a standard grip

I'm 1.75m and prefer fishing with my 13' T53 than a 12'

When I go for distance then I use my 15' Aquallis Skycaster HMG

It's all about preference and what you like as your fishing tools.

If you're comfortable with it then use it. Don't fish 12' just because everyone else uses 12', use a 12' because it feels right to you.

Thanks for your reply Enigma, the reason I ask about the length of the rod butt is because I just don,t feel comfortable  I think I will test my casting distance with a  shother grip and if their no diffrence or an improvement I would like to shorten the rod butt. Do you think it is advisable to do this or rather get custom rods made.

The quickest and cheapest option is to shorten the butt

The next is to strip the front half of the section and rebuild the grip and seats

Anyone can do it but as in any DIY or technical application the guy with the right tools will just make a better finish

If youget a rod builder to do it the you have a professional finish and bind as well

the length makes no differnace, the rod should be more suited to your casting capabilities, "you got to be able to bend it in order to send it". Also if you sliding with 10oz, then you will have no choice but to go for a heavier stick. Best bet is to aim for 12ft, 13ft or 14ft. I recomended 13ft, but you must be able to cast with it, make sure that the lower half of the rod is not too stiff for you.

You missed a trick on this one mag-man.  It's a discussion on freshwater rod casting a maximum weight of 2oz and the length under discusion is the rear grip to reel seat for casting with a Grinder.

Hi All:SSS

Wonder what you would say? I am looking at buying a rod for carp/Yellow for freshwater. :fishn

The purpose is distance and duribility. I am looking at a 13-14ft rod.

My price range being R1000-R1500

These are my options: Shimano, Century, WAFT Black Stallion,Sensation Diablo 3.25 lb, and Gilfox Endurance 3 lb.

ANY COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS?

Find out if you can take the rods for a test at a nearby rugbyfield. That way you can see what works best for you.

I would recommend the Blue marlin T53

Second  option waft

Speak to Yusuf @ western to take both rods for  a field test to rynfield dam.

Personal preference:

Blue Marlin T53 13" 2 piece (not the 1 piece and not the 12' -it's to stiff)13'= Casting power from M0 (15gr) to 120gr distance leads.

Comparable rod to the T53 is a Shimano Tribal 3.75lbs with new rand coming in at over R3k per rod

Africast Competition 360, 12' Rod available at around R650 casts M) - P5 with a smile

Gilfox is a good rod but maxes out at 135m where the T53 can go to over 200m in the right hands whereas the GilFox is designed as a specimen rod

The new Century and WAFT rods I've seen are good. I saw them at the builder the other day but I don't know what name they are being sold as.

Awa-Shima, Outlaw which is my design. Gives about the same as the GilFox but is a 3 piece, simplifying transport

For SA Bank Angling conditions I'd still go with the T53 G2 1-2oz 13'. Designed and Manufactured in SA for SA Anglers

If you would consider 1 piece rods I can get you the Purglas Carp 4500, 14'8" for a very good price as the manufacturer has surplus stock they want to sell off. This is my first choice if a 1 piece is considered. Casts a mile and plays a fish beautifully

There are quite a few shops that have stock but Tacklemania can help with the rods (our Neighbours)

You could even go to Munt dam with Johan and have a cast or 2 to see if it' what you want
