Carp Fishing

We well into the new year .. and what a year 2014 has been. Looking back now I can't help but think every session had presented it's own challenges and frustrations. I was fortunate to have been able to fish almost every weekend barring of course the cycling training weekends.

It had taken it's toll on me physically and mentally that I am at a point now where I need to focus on another species. Some harder fighting fish I seek. Though I have a social session planned with a certain lady to give her that "carp feeling".

It goes without saying the year was one I'd like to forget for the most part. Fishing is a man's escape from life and the duties assigned to him. I looked forward to packing and setting up. Carp rods were out - swims baited and pre-baited when I could and on arrival expectations were high. I contended with weed, geese and some times nature would pour down it's wrath upon me soaking everything to the core. I persisted in rain or sun. Beaten by the intense heat the rods remained out. Every so often during a nap the Fox Micron would beep and either give off a screamer or very slow take. Some fish it seemed where possessed and headed straight for snags of some sort and gave me no quarter - in all this I just lost one fish to snags and hook pulled two others who wouldn't grace my landing net.

I fished with friends - socialised with them and as you can imagine..we covered every topic under the sun at the waters edge. Had some good laughs and recalled great times together. Friends I'd trade for nothing in this world - though they like an itch that won't go away at times but their friendship is greater than a pimple. One friend is taking on the art of bass fishing, ah about time I thought. He had better be as eager for bass as he is as for carp fishing. We have a lesson or two in using a baitcast reel. The others have their challenges as you do, personal goals and perhaps personal bests.

As for me - I had my day of chasing huge commons and colossal mirrors. Yet looking through my albums bring forth many painstaking sessions and sometimes no reward. The Carp Gods Blessed me and I found carp fishing to be a cruel mistress too. These days I'm happy fishing for decent size carp with good friends and enjoying the sound of the Fox Micron amidst the sound of a good steak on the grill. Fish came thick and fast at times and others it came an a glaciers pace. The enjoyment was being there fishing, not so much the catching.

The new year - what are your goals, what are you chasing if not the sun on your back? I've set my sights on a new beginning, a life of quiet and hopefully peace, fishing when I want and wherever I want when I want and when I can. Most of all I've set my sights on living - living what I love doing.

What about you in 2015 ?

Was a good read m8! I can relate with some of the things said... Strange thing last year as I know many guys thats had a very rough year too. Myself included. But one can look back and see the lessons learnt and be thankful for alot of things still. That old saying "what doesnt kill you..." lol.

One thing I do wish now that I read about your friend taking up bass fishing, is that we had bass over here. It would give me an alternative species to gun for now and then. But other than that I dont think I could ever give up carp fishing and this year will be much the same as last, except that thanks to last year I will be way more prepared and focused in 2015.

Hi MC - Yes I agree, carp fishing is still my number one choice.

I really enjoy it but after all the sessions & some bass fishing I just need a short break for some serious cat fish now.

That's a shame hey .. bass fishing also offer good sport from time to time. Don't you guys have any other predatory fish over there ... Wels Cat fish or don't you fish for them ?

The only other species here (Im in Ireland) is tench, bream, pike and a few places have perch. Tried pike fishing but didnt fancy it too much. I still have my pike tackle and a string of lures so might still give it a bash this summer.

perhaps u should .. they put up a fair fight I'd think. I'd certainly have fished for them and perch.

They do yes, I had a couple of pike last winter. But it was tough going in the extreme cold. Thats why chucking a few lures around during summer sounds more inviting lol. The perch are not easily found and they're generally quite small here... 500g-1kg maybe. But who knows hey? I got some smaller plastic grubs and worms for them.

I have caught some nice tench on float rod with thin line and they give a good account for themselves. Have caught a couple of nice perch before on Mepps type spinners but also well below the 1kg mark. More like 500g... They always seem to be small and tend to stick in shoals. I suspect the larger sized perch to be a bit more solitary. Pike I also never really liked as they, for me, never really fought the way I expected them to do...and always targeted them in summer. Never did the dead baiting in the winter thing...its just too damn cold!

Have to agree, sitting there behind a deadbait rod in the depth of winter is no fun at all! And I dont particularly like to get my hands all stinky either...

Tench can be a pest when you're trying to get carp lol! At least they give a good fight so its not a total letdown ha. Had a good number of those slimy things.

@Madcarper - Now that's a sizer pike! Never had the privilege to hook one of those sizers. We used to fish for them over in the UK, Knaresborough. The lake was on someones farm and fishing was prohibited for all... we fished it a couple of times...

@Basspro: Why don't we start targeting the Perch and Peacock Bass right here on our very doorstep?

Nice post John,

I myself have packed away the carp gear and have been spending way more time fishing for bass in Gauteng.

I am now also a deep see rig owner. I have been blessed and able to buy myself a little Kei Cat 15F centre console with 2x Mercury 50hp motors. Needless to say I will be doing way more deep sea fishing and estuary fishing as well.

The really cool thing about the boat is I have many options. Jozini for tiger, Kozi bay for Garrick in the estuaries, Sodwana, Richardsbay for game fish and then of course just the local big dams for kurper and bass from the boat.

I think I have achieved a lot with my carp fishing the last few years and it is now time to move on.

I must tell you John, those pike are fears!!! On our last trip to Morocco while the carp rods were quiet I played with my little telescopic bass rod fishing for bass. I hooked into a few Pike couldnt be more than 3kg and everytime they smashed my Rapala and 50lb whiplash to shreds!!

This year starts of well as we will be fishing for bass again from the boat from 29-30 Jan...

Fish boys and enjoy!! We only live once!!

Nice ... If one can balance different fishing disciplines the better I think. Each one gives the angler a chance to experience things differently ........
