This is another instalment from my Carp Diaries and interestingly enough this weeks topic was around Cautious Carp.
I was looking at my previous screen saver the other day - 3 Cautious Carp, You know those big three monsters feeding on some boilies looking out for any rig close by. Anyway last night I had a conversation with a friend about how some carp react to baited areas, rigs and we even touched on size of water. Now this of course differs from water to water and in some cases on more pressured waters the carp are either aware of your presence and are not phased by you or they tend to find certain areas to hold up at and only have short windows of feeding spells. What he mentioned was how his fish were caught and at only certain times. This made me think on the old Buffelspoort weeklong sessions we fished when water levels were very low. I'd get a bite religiously at around 7am and thereafter I'm King of The Castle if I got another run until sunset. It was on one occasion where we landed such as this where we landed some of the lakes most sought after carp.
The conversation went on to 'thinking differently' for pressured carp, considering rigs and adapting all the time. As I said before the life of an angler is no easy one. My recent session proved this, after watching the water for a while it seemed as if the fish were 'holding up' in a certain area. Although my rods were out and a few handfuls fed on each one it looked like a good idea. We moved. It was after sunset that my fishing partner got into a fish, and another. I was fishing about 50m out but before I cast out the bottom felt clean of any weed etc. Strangely enough I placed the rods at varying depths and only the right hand rod produced fish - I re-baited the other two, changed one of the rigs, sent them out, the left one was cast in open water at range - nothing. The middle rod placed close to the right hand rod - nothing, still the right hand rod produced 4 fish. I can't explain it. "The old adage goes: In the sight of fish, all anglers are equals" - Or are we I ask you ?
