Winter came, I decided to concentrate on one venue I knew held some big carp. Everything was set for winter, rods, reels and bait, the idea was to keep it simple and fish hard. The only thing was the cold but this is what we do..even for one bite.
I planned to fish every weekend - well most weekends anyway or every Friday night. The plan was to at least fish a full weekend session but it never materialised - work commitments and having to pack up a house was no easy feat. Anyway as winter progressed the bait went in and the sessions started - the first 2 sessions I blanked not due to the lack of trying. Friends I fish with were on the fish, they had a few 30's already and they kept coming. I never stressed - I knew I'd get into the fish at some point, was just a matter of time. Though one of my friends really struggled no matter what rigs he tried or how far he cast, he struggled, as one does. I encouraged him that it will come together and not before long he seem to crack his blanking streak - landing some good fish up to 29lb. With a little extra effort on his part and looking at rigs he managed to turn the odds in his favour. I remember one winter session we fished - the temperature was in the minus category and we were told..'You guys are not gonna catch a thing accept the cold' - Well a 26lb'er did come out thank you very much sceptics.
Looking back now it would seem my captures were easy going to some of the other anglers but all the same my carp fishing has been very productive this winter - If anything every fish we had was earned the hard way. I think all facets played a major role from bait to rigs etc. My fish weighed in from 18lb to 38lb landing some really fine specimens.
I always say I go fishing with one thing in mind - It's been like this since the early days. I'm only fishing for one big bite, the Carp Gods tend to be gracious from time to time and when it comes together as my one friends will attest to - it comes together in a big way.
