Carbontex washers general thickness question

What will be the effect on (eg. Torium 30) reel be if the Carbontex washers has a thickness of 0.5mm ( or 0.8mm) and you replace them with 1mm Carbontex washers.
e.g. If there are 3 washers of 0.5mm between the other washers the current total thickness of the Carbontex washer is = 1.5mm
Once they are replaced it would be 3 washers of 1mm the total thickness would now be = 3mm between the other washers
1. What would be a major concern?
2. Can you only use 2 x 1mm washers and where would you place them?
3. Any thoughts \ suggestions?

I don't see the thicker washers causing a problem. As long as they fit properly and that you can tighten and loosen the drag fully. You don't want to have your star drag getting stuck by the reels handle when the drag is not fully backed off.

I would NOT use just 2 washers. You need to have something between the s/steel plates. Use all of them. If you change the number of drag disks, you will be changing the dynamics of the drag itself. It will not be as smooth as it should be and you will loose that wonderful fish that you have always dreamed of catching.

Hope this gives you a bit more to think about.

The thicker 1mm washers do cause a small problem but it can be fixed very easily.
Basically the drag stack is thicker than normal and this causes the drag stack to press up against the side plate.
When the drag is fully loosened, the handle will be difficult to turn. Increase drag pressure and the handle gets easier to turn.
What I've done in all the reels I've put these washers into is sand the carbontex washers down slightly. Just get a sheet or block of medium to fine sandpaper, lay the washer flat on it and rub in a circular motion on each side.
You dont have to take a lot off. You'll have to put the reel back together a few times until it eventually feels right again.

The drag pressure is quite serious using these washers! I have to leave my TN40 drag fully loose when I put my rod in a stand. Just a few clicks and its set to fight. You can really put the pressure on!

Another thing I've done is change the anti reverse pawl to the DC pawl.
Now what this allows you to do is have a wider drag washer right at the bottom.

The toriums and gold trini's come with a small bottom washer because of the design of their anti reverse pawl. The DC trini's have a bigger/wider bottom washer because the anti reverse pawl allows for it. So fitting the DC pawl into these other reels means you can basically upgrade your drag to that of a DC which = more drag pressure.

Here you can see the standard setup inside the reel See how small that bottom drag washer is?

This is inside a DC. See the anti-reverse does not cup the gear. Also see how much wider the bottom washer is;)
