Hi

We've been to Vidal last week. We didn't make any spectacular catches but here are a few pics of what we caught. What made it difficult was the fact the low tide was in the middle of the day. Maybe next time one should pick a date with a low tide early in the morning and later the afternoon? The weather was perfect otherwise.

Can you guys please help me out with the names of these species.

PHOTO 1...CAVE BASS (LANTERN BREAM)VERRY MUCH A WINTER FISH...LOVE CHOKKA AND PRAWN BAITS.

PHOTO 2...LOOKS LIKE A SPIECIE OF SNAPPER...NOT TOO SURE.

PHOTO 3...A NEEDLE FISH (GAR FISH).......SIMILAR TO THE HALFBEAK....THE HALFBEAK HAS A LONGER BOTTOM JAW THAN THE TOP JAW AND NO TEETH.

PHOTO 4...REMORA (SHARK SUCKER)....OFTEN FOUND WITH LARGE "FISH" SUCH SCATES, RAYS,WHALE SHARKS....LOOKS LIKE A JUVINILE PRODICAL SON (COBIA).....FEEDS FROM THE LEFT OVERS OF FEEDING SHARKS ETC...HAS A SUCKING DEVICE ON TOP OF ITS HEAD THAT IT USES TO ATTACH ITSELF TO SHARKS ETC....NOT OFTEN CAUGHT.

JUST A FEW FACTS FROM THE HEAD INFO.....ALL THESE FISH EXCEPTING THE,I THINK "SNAPPER" ARE ON MY ALREADY CAUGHT LIST.

The "i think" snapper is a speakled snapper and grown quite big (10kgs) but ar very strong and pull you into their hole wuickly cutting you off

Thanks for the info guys - yes they were all caught at the light house. We also tried Dunn's hut without success. What we noticed was the green color of the sea during the last 2 days of our stay and I also read one of Volcom's post where he mentioned that if the sea turns "green" you should rather open a beer! You could see the green colour for a few hundred meters and then it turned into blue again quite far out.

Has anyone else also experienced this?

Volcom -> "Tip: Vidal only really produces when the water is a deep blue. If it is Green..... pop open the first beer..... lol."

Hate to say.....I told you so.  :p Glad to see the Cave bass coming round again. Thats only the second Remora I have seen being caught at Vidal... I got one earlier last year on a mackeral slide.... Could this explain the noticable absence of the blackfins and Raggies off the South Ledges? :(

Sorry volcom i beg to differ with u on the point of if the water is green then no fish..let me explain,i go up to vidal every second month,on one ocassion the water was as green as leaf and calm as bay,slid ed a 3 spot pompano and bang i was on dad,played the fish for around 35min,brought it to the ledge,a giant trevally of aroum 40kg i estimate,it cut my 1ml leader on the ledge,but i had a good view of the fish and size,on anotha outing the water was the same at the lighthouse,a group of 6 guys pickd up 12 stumpies all between 6 and 12 kg..a speckled of 8 kg was also caught..this is jus my experiance..but i know volcom should stay at matuba tuba so im sure he knows the water there better than me,by the way how is cape town treating u

As with angling there are no set rules. Been fishing this piece of coast extensively for as long as i can remember.... If Vidal is green its not to say there are no fish peroid. It just means the temp is varied and one has to scratch around to try and find the right type of water.

Iv gotta hand it to those guys that caught stumpies between 6 AND 12KG..... cause thats one hell of a feat...... Never heard or seen of stumpies that size, not even up in Mozambique.

As for the Cape..... its all good man.

Yes i have never seen that size stumpies my self..al with sea lice..hey volcom do you know of a guy by the name of harryl,he stay at matuba and works at vidal..he is in charge of maintenance at the reserve..

I dont think they attain that size boet..... Biggest iv seen is 6kg but heaveir than that and at that quantity esp for Vidal....nay.

Yea i know Harry well and his son Rolf.

THE BIGGEST STUMPNOSE I HAVE WEIGHED AND WITNESED AS A S.A RECORD....CAUGHT BY A JUNIOR WAS 7,2KG....NEVER 4GET IT....GREYS WERE DOING THERE THING AT BLUE LAGOON (DURBS)THE JUNIOR COMES TO ME 4 A PEACE OF CHOKKA.....DIDN'T HAVE...SO HE GOES TO ERRIC WHO WAS THEN FISHING 4 SAP GETS HIS CHOKKA..... IN GOES THE LINE RIGHT NEXT TO ME ......HIS ROD DIPS...ON....PULLS THE FISH LIKE NO MERCY FOR U Mr GREY....AND OUT POPS THIS HUGE STUMPNOSE.....DONT KNOW WHO HAD THE BIGGEST SMILE HIM OR THE FISH.I THINK HE FISHED FOR LAVIATHENS THEN.

I THINK THERE COULD BE A 8KG SOMEWHERE IN THE OCEAN BUT EISH A 12KG NOOOO...
