Cape Vidal fishing

Hi everybody,

I'm looking to go to Cape Vidal from the 16th of Aril to the 20th. Not long I know, so I need to make the best of it.

What should I target from the shore?
Where should I target them?
What should I target them with?

I'm not afraid to do night fishing if needed as we will be about 4 to 5 people fishing at any given time.

Thanks for all your advice and wise words...

Hallo Dwergie

welcome to the forum.

Cape Vidal can be a lucky packet at times.
will you guys be camping at Vidal?
if so, this is good news.

April time is not the best, it is season changing which complicates the fishing.

i see you will be there after the new moon spring tide leading up to neap tide.
this does not leave you with many spots to fish, due to rocky areas.

the bay can be fished early morning, late afternoon and at night.
so that is a plus point if you guys are camping. so i will focus more on these areas.
with the st lucia mouth being open, you could expect to have dirty water present at cape vidal if a big cold front came past during the time.

the water will still be fishable, so it will not be mud as such.

normally just left of the bay, a hole is present, i would concentrate to fish this area more during the day.
you could try fishing north of the bay around the 4km mark.
just note that a ledge does run parallel to the beech and landing a bigger fish over the ledge will mostly end up in a cut off.
the same is true fishing south to the light house.
rocky areas with another parallel reef.
the neap tide will prevent you from getting onto the edge to assist in landing fish.

my bait of choice would be squid, mullet, shad, these are all natural occurring bait there.

new marine protected areas:
please do take note of the new marine protected areas.
certain areas one can only fish on catch and release, some areas are take zones but also only certain species.

species:
wow, too many to mention.
if you can put in long shots, then you could end up getting cuda from shore but this is not common.
kingfish patrol the reefs and ledges.
this includes, giant king fish, black tip/ yellow tail kingfish, blue fin, green spot and other king fish species.

rock cods are also common as well as cave bass speckled snappers, potato bass "protected specie" other bass species as well as green job fish etc.

sharks are also common.

so good luck in the trip, i hope you get stretched and that the fishing will be great.
please do post feedback here. with pictures.

Thank you for the awesome feedback.

We are looking to stay at Vidal so we can fish any time we want.

Think most of the rag bags might be missing but hoping to get stuck into a blackfin or a lost ragbag.

Also contemplating using spoons and playing with soft baits to pass the time during slow hours... Any advise on this?

Kingfish do frequent the waters right through the year at Cape Vidal
so they will be there, but not in the numbers as in august/ sept and oct, right through to summer.

i would slide, left of the bay where the whole is.
one cannot miss it as it is common, big seas can cause it to close up.
i would still fish there during the day as it is away from the noise of beech goers and boats, at night time you could fish inside the bay.
it is normally anything from 700 to 9oo meters left of the bay.

watch out as there will be rocks left of you there as well as a ledge.
sharks are also common there, so slide a bait out there and hold on tight.
scattered rocks are all over the place.

you could also expect stumpies and wave garrick/ 3 spot pompano.
here i would also use prawn for them.

seeing that it is after spring tide, working to neap tide, you could also use soft plastics and spoons.
the neap tide water is always enough for smaller gamefish species "kingies".

so water depth should not be a concern.

one thing that you need to take notice of is water clarity.

it is very clear at times, thus traces needs to be neat and properly made.
the best times would be early morning and late afternoon into the evening.

do not forget a pushing tide from low!!!!!
many fish have been caught in the first 2 hours of turn of the low tide.
ask me about a 28kg geet!!!
