Cape Town Tackle Shops

Hey Guys

Just wanted to share a very interesting experience this week. To keep this constructive, I'm not going to name names.

Like many of you, Ive spent megabucks on tackle over the years and generally stick with one store. It's probably the best known in the Southern Suburbs (will say no more) and I've personally spent about 30-40k there since I started fishing. I also love the chats and see the folks there as friends really.

So lately I noticed some cases where they are much more expensive than other tackle shops in CT. In one case it was a small item in another case a big one.

So I point this out - very decently and just giving customer feedback - even going so far as to suggest what they can do to keep their pricing competitive e.g. direct imports since they do big volumes.

Now bear in mind all the while I am still buying from the store, so not looking for discounts or special treatment, plus they know me personally and know that I am solid.

So what happened? Not even a "thanks for letting us know" or "here's why our pricing is different" or "we're sorry to hear that but there's not much we can do but will keep trying".
Nothing. Pretty much just "oh well, we don't really care as we make enough money on the small items and on other stuff and if customers want to buy elsewhere we're not bothered" (pretty much in those words).

Regardless, we still chat about it a bit and I leave there there greeting everybody and thats that. Yip, exactly like that and I'm actually amazed I did not get upset.

So, it means this:
1. Your loyalty over the years means nothi g to us, even in a depressed economy and even if you have plenty to spend;
2. We are milking our customers enough on the other stuff;
3. We are not bothered about competitor pricing;
4. Go somewhere else if you want.

So I did. Ended up at a store in the Northern Suburbs (no names again). So I go for braid and - you guessed it, 30 mins later end up spending R2500 on a reel and braid and might spend another R3000 on a rod there just because I am an unrehabilitated tackle slut (moments like these the missus is glad we have separate accounts. Not as glad as I am when she goes shoe shopping).

But here's the difference in customer treatment.

1.They did not have the reel in stock but I paid for it as they were expecting same day delivery.
2. It did not come and I'm feeling like the Gods are targeting me :fbash
3. The okes call me, feeling all bad. So now what? They offer me the bigger size, more expensive, at no extra cost;
4. And the kicker - they drop it off for me, all boxed and spooled, and get it in time for the weekend. All with a smile and repeat apologies.

Omg. What a contrast. Needless to say I am probably going to be spending my money there in the years to come. Best part is it's an owner operated business and it shows when guys have a skin in the game.

I know service varies from place to place and person to person and we've all had similar experiences at some point, but Fcuk Me, reasonable pricing, decency and customer service still counts in my book and any business that does not give a crap about that can count me out.

So compare prices (really, you might be shocked), insist on decent service and treat your own customers and business partners they way you would want to be treated.

Right, now where is that new reel I just bought. I hear some fat gallie and belman calling my name.styw::

PS - please keep any comments constructive. I'm not interested in defaming people, playing the race card or any other crap.

Thanks Zeebo. Well written. We need more input like this. Eventually, the capitalists will feel the pinch.

I think this is good...we dont need to name and shame but be can say where we got a good deal so that other anglers can support the shops that are giving us better deals.

Look its a digital world out there, and you must be stupid not to shop around, these days you have to turn every cent around! I dont ever buy anything before getting prices from at least 3 sources. Usually 2 local stores and one online store. After concidering the delivery time and cost I make my decision and buy!

Now, my local store never comes up with a better price and always have excuses like exchange rate and not same buying power and and and. They even once told me that a certain store (that sells car parts as well) have such good prices on their fishing tackle because it gets the people in the store so they can buy car parts... Seriously!!! Its very frustrating because I really want to support them, but now just buy the necessities and some consumables.

I would like to support them and would even pay the extra R100 or so (I believe in supporting local business) but I'm not going to throw an extra R1000 at them just because of my beliefs. Thats by how much some of their pricing is out some times. I mean it borders on ridiculous!

In my opinion the best stores regarding service and pricing is Jacita and Suburban!

very well written
so lets rather keep the tread alive with specials and good service!!
the more it is public knowledge, the better for the shop.
the other shop will obviously feel the pinch

I always bought all my tackle at a place known for "specializing" :dude: in their big range of products, has great service and had great pricing back in the day. But after 15 years their pricing just got too high there.

Learned about Jacita and have only gone there since then. If they don't have the item you are looking for, they always ask if they should make a call and get it.

I compare all my prices from the local stores with the 3 big online-stores and then decide where to buy from. Must say sometimes "Gani's" has some nice specials on rods, bought my Shimano Technium 14ft there and even with shipping it was cheaper than all the places in CT.

A couple of months ago a mate of mine had a relative big order (Ii jumped on the wagon to save on shipping fees). It included 2 x Gosas, 3 x Assassin Beachmaster Zeros and 2 x Assassin Alectis rods... do the math! Anyway we got quotes from 2 online stores and Jacita. With shipping Jacita was only R200 more expensive... thats only 4 fokof craft beers!

We went with Jacita! My mate wasn't happy with the one rod (it being to light for his liking) and wanted to swop it for a heavier rod. This was done without question and with a smile! He only had to pay in the difference.

I know it sounds like I have shares (I dont) in Jacita, but I believe rather than shaming the “bad” shops we should rather name and praise the good shops!

Sorry about the edited posts and re-posts. Issues with the phone.

Let's keep it up. Rather than shame the bad ones we name and promote the good ones.

Never knew about Jacita but will definitely give them a go. Thanks for mentioning.

This is the type of info that we must share on this forum...

I purchased a rod that starts with the first letter of the alphabet and can be locked up for murder late last year at a well known sports shop in somerset west

2 months and about 4 trips later the tip portion snapped when I was retrieving my sinker, was very strange,A klipvis could have snapped it at that point (pardon the pun)

Anyway, the shop advised that these things happen and that a new tip would be ordered.
When I wanted to collect they said first pay up, I walked out there a few hundred poorer(thought it would be a free item)..They at least did drop the price to cost to them eventually..
To this day I feel they should have done more to keep the manufacturer responsible and back me that it should have been a warranty item (even just in good faith)..No rod should have broke after 2 months use.

warranting broken rods is a difficult one. Who's to blame, factory (who can't defend themselves) or user wanting a free replacement?
We bend test every rod before it goes out to the shops and we insist that shop staff get their customer involved in making the same test before the rod leaves the shop. This way, the customer can bend the rod and discover its near limit under the guidance of the staff. There should be little complaints later over broken tips "after several months use". If a rod has a factory fault, it will show itself during the bend tests or during its first outing. We will always listen to stories over how rods were broken, sometimes we commiserate and hand over a replacement, other times we might replace at a cost price. There are no winners when it comes to warranty replacements, except the angler making a bogus claim. I hope this doesn't happen amongst forum members here.

In January this year i was in the market for a grinder setup and Jacita was recommended by a friend I had not heard of them previously so i gave them a call. I ended up buying a 14 foot surf spin rod from them as their pricing was the best. In April we took a trip to the Overberg and while retrieving after a couple of casts the tip of the rod broke. This was my second outing with it and it did not have any damage to it whatsoever. On my return home i stopped by Jacita and explained what happened, they immediately called the Rep of the brand of rod i bought explained my situation and my tip was replaced free of charge then and there. Needless to say since the incident i only buy my tackle from Jacita as their pricing and service are tops.

Its great to have a lekka Tackle shop in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. Jacitas new shop is looking amazing and the service is always great. Not to mention they always seem to have what you are looking for which is always a bonus.
I wish them only the best going forward, tightlines fellas!

I noticed last week that Goodwood Sports is closed. They have been there since the early eighties when I moved to the Cape. I feel saddened by the disappearance of such a well known landmark.
