cape st francis

Got up at around six and started getting my stuff together. After a heavy dose of coffee and a couple of cigarettes I was off on a solo trip to cape st francis.

My mission was to scout for some potential cracker spots and to gather some bait. I arrived there at around 7:40. With the tide still dropping till 8:30 I felt positive. Its not very often I reach my intended spot before the tide turns. The spot looked pretty decent and with a cold easterly wind freezing my back the water looked distinctly galjoeny.

Well, it was not to be. The swell was up and huge waves were crashing over the red bait banks as I stood there wondering about breakfast at a coffee shop in St Francis. Luckily I knew of a little bay that provides some shelter against the worst of the rough seas...

...or so I thought

I was standing at the marked spot cutting some redbait when a big set rolled in. I took some photies afterwards. It looked like this when I got there

The next moment it looked like this. I nearly lost my knife and my bait - only managed two pods. Decided to call it quits after that first swim. It was a cold morning!

I then moved to this spot which looked the calmest I could find. I was fishing pretty light and was washed around a bit resulting in a lot of lost tackle (I eventually ran out of sinkers. Did manage a nice blacktail and janbruin though. I had another big pickup which I am almost sure was a cracker, but after about 3 minutes it ran me around those rocks on the left and cut me off. Pics of fish posted in light tackle challenge.

I then moved to the west of lighthouse to try some ultra light blacktail fishing. It was pretty difficult landing anything noteworthy on 8 pd line between the bricks. Managed one smallish blacktail after being cut off twice at this spot

I was pretty proud of my one bait in particular. Caught the one bigger blacktail and the janbruin on it. After a while the strepies were getting way too annoying and I ran out of bait.

Lekker, lekker. Wouldn't mind a swim in the salt now even if it is cold.

Thanks for keeping the blood pumping with a good report

@enigma

there were a couple of tourists hiking along that stretch. they stood watching me for at least ten minutes wondering what the crazy dutchman was doing standing waist deep in the rough seas.
