As far as I know, no registering or safety equipment is needed for paddle powered boats used on inland waters exept for a lifejacket in some areas. There are some places though were you have to get a permit for the canoe etc. Some place this is free, others it costs a couple of bucks. You get a sticker with a number in return for your name, id number address and telephone number and basically just serves to id you if you don't stick to the rules. Every area has its own rules depending on the regulatory authority, so its always a good idea to check who controls the area and phone them for the rules and requirements.

Not 100% sure about the dams and rivers in your area, but this is the case in the Western Cape area.

Hope it helps.

Im looking for a canoe meself for taking my lines in, nothing fancy, a one-seater should do, hopefully at a good price. Can anybody advise me what I should be looking for, i.e. length & so on?
