agree with duane about using it when stalking fish in the margins. other than that its just looking the part of being an outdoors person. take the shimano tribal range for example..... how on earth will the carp see your lead pouch,rig wallet or carryall?.....a camo bivvy if you right at the waters edge and fishing the margins then maybe but thats a little extream too.....

camo is just a fashion. it's the same with certain new techniques or baits that take the carp angling world by storm. often a lot of guys read about a new bait for instance in a uk magazine and they jump on the bandwagon without giving any thought to what difference it really makes....just fashion i tell you!
to me what matters most is being comfortable (clothes wise), if you're not comfortable you simply will not spend that extra couple of hours at the water and that will never help your catch rate!

PC, being comfortable at the water's edge is a BIG must. But then, some guys feel most comfortable wearing some camo, HAHA!!!
I must admit, when I started out big carp fishing I also got swept up in the whole camouflage clothing hype... but perhaps the good thing was that at the time I couldnt afford the MAD prices of genuine camo clothes, lol!!!
In fact, it is still ridiculously expensive, hahaha. (Not talking about PEP clothes guys...)
I do however believe that if you're fishing at close-range, it does help to be less visible on the bank. If you look at how well carp can see, you wont laugh it off. They have a 180 degree view of the bank for a start. Ppl often forget that big carp also visit the margins, and they are not as foolish as small carp...so any strange bright thing moving on the bank might send them swimming away... (I guess this is more for the margin anglers, lol).
But if you are fishing far out, or fishing in very murky water, then i dont see a need for camo...
Offcourse, its all pointless trying to be less visible when fishing at close range, but being loud and having a big party on the bank! or your car radio blurring.... haha!
I do also think that having camo clothing is fashionable amongst carp anglers. If I watch a carp dvd and the guys are wearing olive green shirt, their gear, tents etc are also naturally coloured etc. it does look alot more professional and neater.
Myself, I do wear camo shorts sometimes, and most of the time either brown, black or grey t-shirts. I dont see anything wrong with guys wanting to wear camo... if that makes them feel comfortable, then let them be.
By the way, did you know that wearing a red t-shirt when taking photos of a mirror carp, or a black t-shirt when takig a photo of a common carp, makes the fish look better? i saw that on one of the Fox videos some time back.... abit of useless info, hahaha.

"DAMDUIKER" - dop, swim etc.
"Pap swaaier" - More serious Damduiker equiped with Stands, bom etc.
"Compo Pap swaaier" - very serious, stands, muti box, gum boots, club shirts with matching socks with cell phone pocket.........
"Specimen" - seroiusly dedicated, all camo gear, rod pods, swingers,helicopter rigs, Will leave a bait in the water for days on end waiting for the ever elusive big one.......

yaaaa MC! if you feel comfortable in camo, wear it man! i really wasn't saying there's anything wrong with it, it actually looks kinda cool, except for the guy who's always fishing in camo from a perfectly manicured (green) lawn here in durbanville! (hope he's not on sealine!

CHehehe! Momo330, you talk like that, about rig wallets and all being camo, I was at Leisure lake about two weekends ago, and my son was laughing his head off at me, I needed to go to the loo for a leak the first night...lol and couldnt find the loo, so a bush did the trick!
Next morning we wake and I stumble out of the tent and look straight at a camo loo .... whaaa ha haaaaa! some buggar painted the thing camo... Dumbass! lol!
OK, heres my take on camo, now that the ball is eventually rolling.
I believe bright colours are out on the banks, yes grey, brown, green, oh and that hippy dull washed out dye tied T will also do..... hehehe! oops! did I give my age away?
I must confess, I wear camo, full camo, flip some times I cant even find myself lol! Let alone my green fox splicing needle if I drop it in the grass.
I think as specimen angling was started by an elite group of anglers who wanted to stand out from the crowd, with techniques surpassing all other forms of angling, so the camo too made them stand out....lol!(uhm! that doesnt sound right) where they?...lol
It showed that these guys were serious and professional about what they stood for, blending into nature, eco and carp care, environmentalists. They were/are a bread separated from the main stream of fresh water anglers, prepared to wait that illusive big carp out and not tempo angle, but study the venues, walk around dams, analysing the features, looking for the carp partols/routes, signs, being close to nature, even creeping up on waters low down so as to get that glimpse of the carp in the margin...to study its behaviour and route.
Another reason I wear them at night is they look military, and I miss my border patrols (lol not!) but, if some one rocked up near our camp sight, they'd get such a skrik, thinking they were in an army camp or something...hehehe!
well when they see my R4 they sh!t themselves!
Its a choice now though, and I prefer to wear them, I dont see them as fashion, I wouldnt be seen wearing them in town, (no, not because I'd be camouflaged lol!) but I feel they suit the environment we claim to be protecting and sharing at the said dam/nature reserve/conservational park we at. I feel they are comfy, durable and warm enough to cope with the demands we face along side the dam. Lets face it, Specimen angling was/is an underground thing, and if you stalking a fish at a dam where you not supposed to be angling (eina! guilty as charged lol!) then you not as conspicuous by passers driving by... Ive adopted a strange thingy of late, and it's a friend of mines fettish too, lol! to hide, If I could have my rods just sticking through reeds I will do it, strange as it may sound, but then, like said repeatedly in the above posts, Im angling the margins, 10m-30m. (you'll be amazed at what a fish can see, MC touched on it, 180 degrees and here Im trying to coux a carp with my nice bright red T-shirt with "Im too sexy for my shirt printed in bold yellow letters" to take my hookbait! hehehe!
Also, in conjuction with camo's, no lights, (except a red head light occassionally and not directed to the water) no open fires, music, talking or stomping on the bank... Its a lonely life......... but at the dam, its bliss! nature at its best!
A typical example, a public venue I was targeting last year, was so rowdy that I went across the dam, between reeds and parked my van behind reeds and camo'ed out so well that the ppl never even knew I was there. Magic! a whole dam to myself!
So yeah, I wear camo's and its part of my kit, and I do feel its an integral part of my carp angling stratergy and I will wear them close and far angling. As PC said, if you comfortable wearing them do so.... thanx PC for the permission.. and I promise I'll stay off your lawn!

One negative thing about camo's though for me is that the shirts i bought are very loose arround my neck meaning i am burning more on long sessions. Me having a sensitive skin i do not really like it.

As much as we all hate to go into certian stores...I hate hunting but Hunting stores have the biggest range of camo clothing and the T-Shirts fit perfect. Bit pricy but good quality.
If anyone has had the pleasure of shopping at China City or China Mart...camo heaven!!!!!
