Cahora Bassa

Hi guys, I am new to the Sealine Forum, have bumped into it a few times on a Google search and finaly decided to sign up.

A couple of us have been invited up to Cahora Bassa for a week so I thought I would tow my Ali boat up there and get some Tiger fishing action. I know it's a massive dam and it's best to get a local guide, unfortunatley we won't have the luxury ...

I would really like some kind hearted soul to put up some GPS co-ords of some of the fishing spots. I've heard of places like "Three Musketeers" but haven't a clue where they are...

Thanks, I am leaving on Friday so will also feed back what we get to the forum. I have researched as much as I can and have some ideas, I guess I will dig around the locals and use the usual gut-feel ...

After a hectic trip through Harare, via Mukumbura to Magoe ... and then on a 70 Km 4x4 trail dragging my boat we got to a camp on the shores of Cahora Bassa. The trip took almost 3 days and included a midnight welding job in the bush on my trailer, we broke the draw bar, eish.

Fishing, however, was quite good with lots of Tiger fish in the 6 to 8 pound mark. We saw a lot of action with fish hammering small ones against the shore which was a lot of fun to get into with Meps and Tiger Wakkas. Color of the day was Chatreuse flash on the Tiger Wakkas with a small fillet on the large hook.

We had a couple of big fish lost on equipment failures, one a split ring on an Efzet which we neglected to switch out and the biggest loss was a BUS lost on a shoddy knot between braid and flourocarbon leader. My own fault, damn and BUGGA! This one was hooked on a drop off of one of the islands on the western side of the main lake, drop off goes from 12 to 45 foot of water then to 60 then to 90 feet in a very short staircase. (I have some GPS co-ords but I see now why the issue with guys not posting them, a lot depends on which part of the lake you are staying on, it's just tooo big to get around.) 

We had a couple of follows in deeper water by BIG fish and one behemoth tried to eat a 3 pound fish that was hooked - I think it was glad to get in the boat.

It's a really tough trip dragging the boat and in retrospect I would probably try and get a camp with boats and either drive in through Mutare / Tete / Songo or best option fly into Tete and get a pickup.
