It differs,we did a lot of chart work, very little first aid, nothing on flags and bouys, quite a bit on boat safety and equipment

Because of area we dont have a harbour we did not do ship lights etc but they did say we needed to do that part of the test if we ever wanted to enter a harbour like Port Elizabeth

Thanks guys. I will just have to learn and hopefully make it. Quite expensive and a distance to travel from Vereeniging.

yes practical is done at the coast for obvious reasons but the exam can be done at a qualified examiner anywhere.

once you have passed the practical you have passed it even if you fail the theory you are allowed to write it again
but don't stress to much if a dumb-ass like me can pass it anyone can ::S

My exam covered something of everything, including a few questions on chart work so I wouldn't focus only on particular sections. Cover everthing. My advice would be, don't rush, take your time when reading the questions and you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the advise. Will give it my best shot and so looking forward to be able to do a bit more than the usual rock and surf. Just hope i can avoid the "ego" thing and dont want to upgrade all the time!!!!

We got a bit of everything... Buoys, flags, scenarios, horns/sounds, first aid, emergency's at seas and we even got interviewed. Card work we got quite a bit but that is the easy part.

If I can give you one tip, use common sense!!! They dont try and catch you out but merely test you on certain scenarios you could encounter at seas. Most questions are simple and you should be able to score points. But for others you need to study and especially if you are still a novice.

Some questions is not even in the book but it is common sense. And know you winds and also ho to explain them by a picture as this is sometimes good to draw with an explanation in case you missed something.

Practical is easy... You should be fine! Even I passed it so...

and the exam was in english.
so what i knew about gunnels, starbord en port side.
broaching, freeboard, helm etc.

maaki saaki, jy moet albei doen.

Hi

I went with Dawsons skipper training based at the N.S.R.I building at Durban harbour.

What a great bunch of people, great equipment and facilities. This wasnt easy as Paul and Gordon do not compromise on any of the aspects of the trainning for the obvious reasons, but going with them has grown my confidence as they except nothing less than a above average passmark for theory and practical as you will ultimatly be the responsible person for youre vessel and crew.

Cant wait to get back out there.

Regards

Stem saam.
