Hi Guys,

Please advise as to what the state of the river is and if fih are coming out after the floods there a while back?

Is bait-collection etc still feasible?

Thanks in advance, Nov

Hi
Was down there yesterday. It should have been good but I blanked big time. I did not see anybody else catch either. There was hardly any baitfish about- very strange. I did see some leeries but no luck. FYI I was spinning from 5 till 12. Even on light rods it was tiring.

I can't comment on the river other than there is a huge flock of Turns feeding every morning between the wooden jetty and the hotel. They must be having a go at small bait fish. Offshore is relatively productive. Every day has seen its fair share of kob, big and small coming off.

The river definitely seems way bigger than before. Far less sand banks visible even at Spring Low. There seems to be a lot more water coming in and out. Hopefully this gets the fish in quickly. The mouth is a very wide channel now. We'll have to wait and see. There seems to be a sentiment that the flood might have been a blessing in disguise in that it cleared a lot of sand out of the river mouth.

Hi Freakazoid - that sounds great. Thanks for letting me know. I don't have a boat so will have to make do with what I can...might just get lucky.

Cheers Novice

What is where in the river is anybodies guess at this stage. You can walk past Oysterbeds around the rocky outcrop then there's a small bay and a nice muddy stretch up to the bend at Rooiwalle. This stretch is right across from Mudlark lodge. This is normally a good spot for Leervis, that Tsunami will come in handy. Good spot for getting them on fly as well. I believe there is grunter around as well.

Hi Freakazoid - forgive me but is that spot to the left or right of the river boat launch side if you're standing on the bank of the Infanta side of the river?

Cheers

If you stand on the slip on Infanta side then Mudlark is to your left. The mudflats are then straight across from where you are.

Hi
I have just come back from Witsand...had a great 5 days there. The weather was pretty good for most of the time and the fishing was outstanding. There are loads of grunter around. I did'nt fish very hard but rather fished selectively at the top of the high tide in late afternoon and only fished with mud prawn.

We caught a lot of grunter of 50-60cm that were in very good condition and fought strongly on light tackle.

The water is very warm (around 23 dgrees)and at high tide the water is a good clean colour which bodes well for good fishing.

We saw a lot of big cob being gutted at the jetty...caught at sea.

The mouth is completely open...all the sand banks have been washed away and the mouth seems deeper than I have ever seen... I have had a house there for 15 years.

I think the flooding has done the fishing a huge favour with lots of fish coming into the river easily.

Although I saw lots of leeries chasing baitfish in the shallows I never even got a follow or saw any action when I threw plugs and spoons..so am not quite sure whats going on there...will try again when I go back after Christmas. Maybe things will change if I use livebait.
