Hallo Gapie

You are on your way to probably the best small mouth venue in this country! I have fished the Breede in Robertson/Bonnievale area a lot, hope you have a canoe?

If you are hunting smallies, I suggest you look before and after the rapids that is ussually where they are most active. Very effective lures would be "Ring Worm" colors black/Chartruese or green pumpkin on a small texas weight. "Fat Albert Grub" on a little 1/8 ounce jighead. You have to fish the rocky area's before and after rapids that is where they hunt. If you want to use hard baits I suggest rapala jerk baits green and gold!

If you are chasing large mouth stick to the side of the river and you have to fish in the structure, trees, reeds, grass, rocks all there. Use a normal texas rig with a dark color worm. You will occasionally hook a smallie in the structure as well.

I don't know how hard the river is flowing at the moment, I know the cape had a lot of rain. If it is flowing to hard stick to the side you will still pick up some fish.

Good luck and let me know!

If the river dropped then yes you can! It makes some nice holes between the rapids and that is where the fish is.

thanx HennieS, will use your tips. you can expect one hell of a report back on monday morning. defnitly taking the camera with so you will see some foties.

Loams, the best time to take your float tube is when the rivir is on its highest, cant guarenty that you will catch fish but im sure you will have a great time on the rappits!!

yip ou boet loams is right i blanked!

woke up at 4 on saturday morning and left for robertsen. got to my friends "spot" and started fishing. at about 12 in the afternoon i gave up. after i tryed all my lures in my kit, nothing worked!
i then decided to rig up a carp rig to my 6"6' medium fast stokkie and after a hours wait i had a fish on! i recon it was about a 2kg carp, but 5m before i had it in my hads the knot broke!

so i had a horrible day's fishing at the breede rivier.... but i will go back soon to try again!

Boetie,

That's why I have all the manuals that I study all the time..... You just failed your "knots" test. You should brush up on them... Imagine how cool it would have been if you were the only person to pull a fish on Saturday AND that after everyone laughed at your "toy" Scimitar Rod........

Gapie, don't worry that happens to the best of bass anglers believe me! Was the river flowing? I fished for carp there myself there is some freight trains in that river believe me.

The place that we were fishing the rivir was flowing very slowly. you could see carp breaking the water very often. We were fishing next to the bridge thats goes over the rivir on the way to villiersdorp from robertsen.

Just because you went to one of the best small mouth spots doesnt mean that they will be easy to catch.
Better luck next time...

I had given up on the Breede as I had only caught 2 bass in about 3 years, but on Monday when I was tidying up after the Wine-on-the-River Festival I spotted some nice bass right under my feet at the venue. So now i am keen again. This is on private land just above the weir at Van Loveren/Goudmyn.

I usually fish the rapids below the weir and when I was younger I made good catches. But I think the carp and barbel have taken over, probably soemthing to do with the shit (literally) water quality these days. Blame the Worcester muncipality for this- their sewearge system is up to shit!

Hey Gapie, if you go again, go to Nekkies on the brede river its there on your way to quaggaskloof, at the pump station on the brede river is where we get smallies with a average weight of 1.3kg and fight like criminals. otherwise its very difficult to catch 'em in the river.
Crank baits are deadly there at the pump station.
