Brand new to Gauteng

Used to live in the Western Cape for as long as I care to remember, have now uprooted myself and getting back into the fishing game.

Have a spot across the bridge on the other side of Oranjeville, Vaal Dam and plan to pay it a visit next weekend.
Have bought the necessary just to get started, nice 12 foot rods, decent bait runner reels and a few odds and ends.

Stumped with the amount of dips and flavours on the market. Any advice of what is a sure fire for that area and is earthworms a good item on the menu?

Well first of all....:welcomesea:

The guys are always joking that the amount of dips on the market catch more anglers than fish....and I fully agree. You dont need all that many dips, personally I only really use about 6 or so that I feel comfortable with, plus it helps to know what the base flavours of each dip is, so you dont go buying flavours that actually smell very similar, for instance Banjo is a mix of Banana and condensed milk (if Im not mistaken)...and Perdeby is a cinnamon based mix, so bunspice and cina 1/2/3 are somewhat similar. I believe a few dips are caramel based. Not that the variations are not good, coz I prefer Banjo to banana, but my advice would be to start with some basic flavours, and see what works, for you, and take it from there. A couple of attractants/spicy flavours would'nt hurt, I recommend garlic and TCP. With sweet flavours, banjo, caramel, perdeby, almond are what I mostly use. Oh, and never leave home without the FX. ANd yes, Earthworm, like SWD (sweet white dough) are always winners, and dont write sweetcorn/maize off.

This sticky contains alot of useful info: http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=35040&forum_id=80

Other important factors to consider are of course presentation and distance/depth, but you probably already knew that ;-)

hey man welcome to this side --

if any thing i would say every one is going to all give u their own recommendations about this dip being good and that one being better
and then your also gonna have a 1000 dips in your bag and be stumped about what to use.

just stick to the basics like steel said and then take it from there -
i usually fish plain then only go to a flavor if that doesn't work.

but yep there are a few main categories: sweet / spicy /strong

i'll try find a list of a few basic must have dips that should get you by.

Thank you very much for taking time to answer.

Going to use your advice and see what happens. I have already started off by preparing some caramel, almond, banana and vanilla based dips. Will expand a bit more on the spicy ones and see what happens.

I think I am quite traditional when it comes to these kinds of things, suppose I have not immersed myself into new technology yet.

To good fishing!
