Braids

After watching Hier Gaan ...... I saw them use KINGFISHER PRO SUPER BRAID and it made me want to get opinions on other braids.

Anyone else use something other than fireline? eg Viper Braid, Whiplash etc?

I recently bought the Mustard Braid from Kings - 270 metres for R220.00 (19lb). This particular brand of braid is aslo covered with a waxy coating, casts very well and has a much smaller diameter than Berkley Fireline . Seems very strong - havent hooked into anything big yet though .  Also cheaper . I managed to fill a Daiwa 3000 with the full 270 metre with a little room left o the spool. Give this one a try guys - good stuff.

Most of the braids are made from the same or similar fibres so the difference is mainly in the weave or coating.

Its all very dependant on what you want to do with it whether it suits your style of fishing or not.

One little known fact is that some have a very low melting point and if you cast a lot and hard, (if you often get white burn marks on your mono) beware, the friction heat can melt the stuff right off.

I agree with the Chopper, except I would add...

Whiplash, Viper, SUFFIX Performance, Mustad, Fireline, Kingfisher Pro, Tuff Line, Suffix Gyro.

Guys

I'm gonna sound stupid:doh now and maybe it's because I am, but what's the actual use for braid if, in my experience, it does not even remotely :temp:have the same abrasion strength as with say the normal mono's and fluros?

I bought a reel of the fire line had that on for one day and ripped it off on the water:swear, seriously NO abrasion strength, the slightest rubbing against a submerged branch and there is nothing at the end of your rod except slack line :cry1as its busted off.

Perhaps, my idea off it's application is all wrong:op::, so if it is then please :helpthis misguided :f1shy:uzi?

Very good point for a FADER, from a very quick search on the net it seems that abrasion resistance is not one of the strong points of braids.

Hi Guys,

I have used several spools of Kingfisher 30lb braid for light tackle lure fishing on both spinning and casting reels.  After 2 outings the stuff was badly frayed.  I have since replaced it with 20lb Power Pro and been using it for a year and a half.  It is awesome stuff and highly rated in the states.  Nepptune actually put me onto it and I know he shares a similar sentiment.  He got his 150 pound tarpon on 30lb (see http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=1252&forum_id=9)!

Including shipping from the states, you will find it is very competitively priced with the other brands.

Gotta agree with Marshie.... Power Pro is the way to go... or if you can't get it, try Stren Super Braid... Also great!

HEY GUYS,

WE HAVE TESTED BRAID ON OUR LINE TESTING MC AND A INTERESTING OBSERVATION IS THAT IT BREAKS HIGHER WHEN WET.I THINK THIS IS BECAUSE THE WATER COOLS IT DOWN WHILE UNDER STRAIN AND THEREFORE IT DOES NOT GET TOO HOT.ONE THING BOTHERS ME AND THAT IS THE BRAID WE TESTED WAS DOUBLE X 30LB,THE MULTI COLOURED ONE,IT IS CALLED VIPER BRAID.TESTING IT DRY IT PARTED BETWEEN 6.5 AND 7 KG.WHEN WET THE HIGHEST WAS 8.5 KG.NOW HOW THE HELL CAN THEY CALL IT 30LB BRAID.MY SUGGESTION IS:TEST THE STUFF BEFORE YOU USE IT OR YOU MAY BE LOSING A GREAT FISH SOME DAY.:doh

Have to put my vote in for Powerpro as well. Got 500yds of 50 pound on my Grandwave 50 with enough room left on the spool for a topshot of about  80 metres .20 mono if I want it. Its great stuff.
