HI guys, I need some advice! I just got a new Spheros 5000 sw to be paired with my exceller 10,6! Will be using it for drop shot as well as scratching. Now the question which braid should I get and the lbs? Does anyone know which braid has the best casting ability? Thanks

a can of worms here!

the 8 weave braid are much softer then the 4 weave.
that said, according to a good friend of mine, 8 weave has less resistance to abrasion!
it seems like the spinning braid, jerry brown is a pe 1,5 is best. for long distance casting.

it is essential that the braid is match to the reel!
i am sure some members will chip in here!

HMP 8 strand weave 30lb or so would be my recommendation.. maybe a tad heavier than that, but then your casting will distance start to suffer as you go above. There are other good braids too HMP has been the best feel and casts best and is the most durable versus the price it is.. of the braids I've tried.. Been very happy with rovex (rebranded sufix line I read) as far as cheaper braids go and spiderwire is ok but a bit loose in the weave and of lower quality than HMP. Gatorbraid casts a mile but doesn't last too long and is too thin for any abrasion. Hope that helps.. Novateur I have been using for bass lately and haven't fished it much but is very nice too and seems to be abrasion resistant as they say it is, just a tad thick but for my application just fine. Original fireline is thick and doesn;t cast great but is tough as nails..they don't really tell the truth with regards to line weight, ie. advertised 30lb is more like 50-60lb in strength but as thick as 50lb so not really the best "30lb"..

I would recommend Suffix 832 30lb braid for your application. Best in terms of abrasion resistance and casting ability trade-off. From a purely casting perspective the Gosen jigging braid or Jigman braid would probably be best. The Japanese braids are far closer to their stated line diameter than the American products but then obviously the thicker the braid the better abrasion qualities.

The nice thing about Suffix is that it's half the price of the Japanese braids. Although R500 is still a big chunk of change.

Whiplash is for backing and not great casting and costs an arm and a leg and kidney

Gosen is also good, I have gatorbraid as well.
Dont buy cheap, buy quality!!

Suffix 832 30lb is decent quality for its price, I use it on my catfish reels and its held up well hunting them in amongst the structure found in the Vaal, Orange and Bloemhof systems

Thanks for all the input so far, but now I am even more confused then I was! Seems like everyone has their own favorite when it comes to braid! I have also heard that Rovex Viros would be a good option?

exactly!

this is where the popcorn starts!
the long distance casting braids is the goosen!

as you stated, you want to scratch and do some drop shot. that tells me, not too heavy and not too far!

then I guess a cheaper braid would suffice!
gator braid in a 48lb might work. thin and don't work on 48lb, rather 30 lb and your safe.

so, you still hungry?

have some popcorn::pop:::pop:

if you looking for braid that breaks at stated strength then p.e braid is the one for you.. https://www.facebook.com/MahigeerWS/posts/676602492364682

but at stated does not mean abrasion resistance is great just need to know rods stated line weight and match that to braid by the x10 rule for p.e braid

with so much on the market it can become confusing so try and stick to 1-3 makes for your purpose be it spinning/bait/jigging etc

I have used Fireline original.....thick, tough and heavy duty. They don't distribute in SA the thick stuff for my multipliers anymore.....so tried 2x300 meter spools of HMP and must say....no problem on multiplier or coffee grinder. I like it as well, for the smooth retrieve through the guides compared with Fireline...noisy. I have just bought some Suffix 832 for 2 other reels. Reason being, its had a number of good reviews on this site and 600 meter will maybe give me 2 reels at an acceptable price. When choosing....my final 3 were, Suffix 832, Gosen and Powerpro. I'm sure when it comes to braid.....there are another 20 other opinions out there.....each to their own and good luck.

No one ever mentions Daiwa braids, what is the reason for this?

Are the coloured braids , that are used for jigging with depth markings any good for casting and abrasion?

Thanks for all the input! (Voel nog steeds soos n verkluermannetjie op n smartie boks)! I see that hmp does not make a 30lbs 8 strand, and I would like an 8 strand braid! I am thinking of getting Gosen 25 lbs or Sufix 832 20lbs seeing that the 832 is apparently stronger than its rating, and also a little thicker...

8 strand vs 4 strand , double protection! lose 2-3 strands on the 4 strand and its tickets, but lose that on 8 strand you still have a chance...thats my take.

Its an interesting topic, there is tons of info out there, BUT, mostly for jigging, bass fishing and spinning light rods. The use of braid for surf and other applications basically means it will always be by trial and error and feedback, so one would have to just go on testing advice...the jury will always be out on that one!......Happy fishing!

Before you go further, just have one last browse at this link, probably the most comprehensive review of braids available..hope it helps!

The 3 on my short list were Suffix 832, Gosen and Powerpro. The Suffix 832 and Powerpro have 7 strand Dyneema and one strand Gore. This makes the line a bit more ridged/bumpy with more noise coming through the guides on retrieve. The HMP and Gosen are silky soft and silent through the guides. Going to fish Kanon (sand and reef)last week in Nov and will be fishing the soft HMP against the Suffix 832 lumpy. As GV says.....these lines need to be put to the test.

I've only ever fished 30lb Gatorbraid. It is an impressive line for its diameter and casts a mile. I've never had any problems with wind knots etc. Regarding the abrasion resistance. It does wear a bit at the business end, but I think that is actually an asset, as this weakens the line ever so slightly, so that if you get snagged and have to break off, the line will snap close to the business end, so you will not loose too much precious line, hence I have been using mine for about 3 years now and not had to respool.

I just spoke to the guys where I buy my fishing stuff, and they only have Gaterbraid (orange) 18kg, hmp 30lbs (4 strand) jdb, rovex viros, sufix performance and then a braid that I have never seen: Sufix pro 8 the 28lbs is 0.18.. Does anyone know the Sufix pro 8?
