braid leader

Just thinking that a mono leader still has a fair amount of stretch in it, which adds to the shock absorber effect and put less stress on knots and the hook itself.

Skrops, don't you think if you have all the confidence in the world regarding your knots and hooks, that the shock absorber effect is irrelevant? They say if you have confidance in your tackle and traces you have won 60% of the battle already.

Just a thought?

Used braid for leader quite some time ago. Had all kinds of hassles with it and went back to basics. Real tuff terrain step up ur leader or go racket snare string.

the strach is also very important when fighting a big fish upclose and in shallow water, braid will just break especially with hmg rods, as the line does alot of the streching to compinsate for the lack of bend in the stick, i think this is just an usumption

I really don't think so, more strech in line less stress on knots. Remember how that stumpie broke that hook of mine? why? cos there was not enough line between rod and fish, and the weekest part popped, but if there was more line less stress on everything cos of the shock absorber.

this is just what my logic tells me, no scientific analysis

Here is some thing i have learnt in my fishing career, don't talk about things you have not tried your self, and trie everything once because that is what makes the sport evolve, Guys i have been fishing with fireline in the bricks for quite some time and it has no equel! it is not expensive either it works out to R1 per meter and if that makes a diferense in landing a fish 8 bucks is a bargain!

Whaler... a question... Are you using 80lb Fireline as a leader in this scenario? On top of mono topshot? That's sparked my interest big time! Something I'm going to have to try too...

And please tell us where you get 80lb Fireline for R1/m - ^^... Best I can get is over R2.50/m for that size...!?

How are you connecting the Fireline to your Mono?

Hi Reefman

I got a spool of that yellow/green fireline from commercial marine in PE i paid R349 for 300yards, i use two ways to cone ct to my mono top shot (1) figure 8 with 3 loops onto a Bimini with 3 legs also 3 loops. (2) i use 50lb dacron and make a windon leader.the fire line is about .80mm and is rated 80lbs but i have hung my full body weight on it and bounced a few times and it held!! i weigh in at 94kgs!!! i'm not guessing here i use the stuff often and have never been cut off!
