Boknes & Cannon Rocks

I recently introduced my wife to snorkeling in Cape Vidal during our honeymoon. We are going to Cannon Rocks in a couple of weeks' time and she is very keen to go diving. Can anyone provide some info on what the conditions are for snorkeling. Are there some spots divable for beginners? Also, any good spots for spearfishin from shore?

hey boat,

There is generally a surf running and it churns up the water, but depends when u go, and if the westerly has been blowing warm clean water will come in. For a beginner snorkeler she may be disappointed, probably bitterly disappointed after vidal.

Spearfishing is another story and depends how far u want to walk and the conditions. I suggest u look at google earth and u will see the reefs, some lose in. I would trend toward moving west and find spot close to those reefs. Good cracker both black and white. Actually u could expect any reefys but those being the prize and if u get to the pinnacles you may be lucky to bump into a yellowtail.

this site will give you better understanding of the reefs

then not far Kenton middle beach has some good diving too. Head out left from the car park. There is some amazing reef there also with everything and u will see some pinnicles about 400m out. If u fit enough to get there i know of yellowtail of over 20kg speared there, big cracker (both) too. But i wouldnt do that one alone and watch there is a west to east current there at times

For your lady i know there is a scuba school in port alfred, also not too far away, they take you out to fountain rocks. I havent done it but apparently a good dive.

Hope this helps, give me a shout if u need any other info

Thanks a mil Bushbuck! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! yup, very few places beat Vidal, and what's more, when she dived there we were very lucky to come accross a sleeping (hawksbill I think) turtle in a shallow cave right there in the bay! She was stoked!! So I reckon its going to be tough to beat that first dive..

Yeah, Im not too sure yet that I will take my gun out, but you never know, that perfect day with good viz might just dawn..

The shallower colours are darker blue.

You will not get much detail out of the marine charts in the shallower areas, because they are for shipping use and mainly concentrate on areas where ships will navigate.

ya sorry that site only mainly helps with the pinnacles and sandbars. It is more acute in certain areas like here in the cape around the point. But if u look around bokness. those little red dots, and the green bar are shallow points and pinnacles. Match it with google earth and u should have general diving area.

Ask around there, for a guy named Owen Huckstable, he is a top spearo.

I you go to Cannon rocks and you look towards the west, there are some old fish kraals there in the corner
