Boat requirements...

Howsit guys! Hope everyone has had a good week thus far!

Myself and a mate recently got a small bass/river boat... its roughly 4.5 meters in length, and 1,3 meters in breadth. With a 40 hp motor.

We would like to fish bass tournaments in the Western Cape, I would just like to know what requirements are that we need to adhere to to be able to fish in the tournaments... ie. Life jackets? flares? Torch?

Thanks you in advance and tight lines!

Hello Raptor,

There has been a number of changes to legislation of late and you would be well advised to get your boat up to the required standards as the SAPS waterwing have started taking to fresh water venues checking on skippers licences and boat registrations (not that they might actually have more pressing needs elsewhere...)

As skipper you require a minimum of inland waters or catergory E skippers ticket and your boat has to be surveyed by a registered surveyor who will issue you with a bouyancy cerificate and a 'seaworthy' certificate. There are quite a few of these chaps around but the guy we all use is Peter Els and you can contact him on 082 509 9541.

Theewaterskloof dam out at Villiers is a good place to start. Have fun.
