Boat Relocation

Hi guys,

I am permanently relocating from Durban South Africa to Dar Es Salaam and would like to entertain the option of taking my C-Ski 440 with me as opposed to selling it.

Can anyone please advise me on if this is feasible, what the estimate of the cost implications are. Could be easier to just sell it and buy a boat that side, i am not sure.

Your advice and comments will be much appreciated.

I am not going to tell you what is the best option, but here are some points to consider:

You will need to consider road freight or ocean freight. Road is faster but much more expensive.
On ocean freight you will in all likelihood need to containerize the boat. General Purpose containers cone in two sizes; 6m and 12 m. My guess would be that the boat and trailer will be too long for a 6m container. All charges are pretty much double on twelve meter containers, compared to 6m containers.
You will need to apply for an import permit in Tanzania as your boat will be regarded as second hand goods.
You be will be liable for import duty and VAT in Tanzania based on the value of the boat. VAT is calculated at 17% in Tanzania based on a cost and freight value. I.O.W the shipping cost will be added to the value of the boat to determine duty and VAT.

This will not be a cheap exercise, that's for sure.

Could be a nice drive up there pulling the boat.. couple of stops along the way.. bass in Zim, or GT's in Mozambique, billfish in Kenia.. and before long you've arrived

Thank you for the input gents. I have been doing some homework and spoke to a local boat manufacturer in Dar es Salaam regarding this and they advised that goods manufactured in a SADAC country can be imported duty free and only pay the VAT. Outboard engines are duty free and VAT exempt. The boat is quite old and so they have no way of verifying current market value thus the boat is worth what we say it is. I hope i am on the right track here.

Of course there is still the cost of freight etc i have been strongly advised against using Dar port. Best would be by road but as you guys mentioned this is expensive. Shipping to Zanzibar is also a good option apparently.

I think I may just pay for road freight and get it done. Will still be more affordable than buying a new boat there.
