Blue Lagoon Dropshotting?

Hi Everyone

Has anyone done dropshot at blue lagoon, i gave it a try today, under the bridge and further up towards the surf, didnt have any luck. I was using a range of berkley gulp products on a 1/4 ounce jighead.
I would really apreciate any advice on this area. Where should i be fishing, what should i be using, when should i fish and what sort of species could i possibly catch?

I am new to dropshot fishing, well new to saltwater fishing in general. Have only done bass fishing in the past.

Heck, I don't know the area but if you've been catching Bass it's the same technique.

Just keep at it.

You'll get some.

Blue Lagoon can fish well under normal circumstances- perch, sand gurnard, shad and dozens of kingfish. However, KZN has had extensive rain and the river flushed on Friday morning, muddying the water and making it too fresh and full of reeds, waste and water hyacinth. I would have been amazed if you actually did get something in that mess...

Once water conditions return to something like normal, it is a good learning spot for dropshotters from the estuary mouth to the golf course bridge. Incoming and outgoing water is the best time, and when these co-incide with dawn and dusk, you are guaranteed at least a fish or two if you persevere. 1/8th oz and 1/4 oz jigheads are fine, 4 to 8 lb braid, 10 lb fluorocarbon leade and some Gulp minnows and shrimp are the real deal. If things are really grim, camo worm on a 1/16th oz jighead will get the scoreboard rolling. Vary your retrieve between short hops and panicked swimming twitches and you will get one sooner rather than later.

Im going to give it another go when conditions get beter. There was a large amount of green vegetation that was washed up all along the side and in the estuary.
I am currently fishing with 12 pound kingfisher casting braid, the lightest jighead that i have is a 1/4 oz, i will get some 1/8th oz and 1/16th oz jig heads before my next trip there.

Once again i really apreciate all the help.

You need to go light for Blue Lagoon, 1/16 jig heads and 1"-2" lures, light brais 2-4lb and 4-8lb leader.

You should wade on the Northern Banks and you can fsh from the mouth right up to the 2nd bridge.

You will get several species:

  • King Fish (By any drop off)[/*]
  • Perch (By the bridge pylons and on the drop offs)[/*]
  • Kob (Very slow retreive)[/*]
  • Garrick (From the mouth to 1st Bridge in teh current)[/*]
  • Grunter (On the flats with incoming tide, sight fishing only))[/*]
  • Springer (Near the mouth)[/*]
  • Thorn Fish (Everywhere)[/*]
  • Gurbards (On sand banks)

Most the fish are 1Kg and less, but I have caught a Kingie fo around 3Kg, and nice size Grunter a Gariick of around 2Kg and Springer around 1.5Kg)

You can wade over the mouth if the tide is low.

Or.

You go over the bridge and park near the reserve, but park at the top by the prostitutes (they don't want trouble so no one will mess with your car) not lower down or you car will get broken into.

Then walk down and wade up to the big bank in the middle.

Remember that between the beach and the 1st bridge up to the center bridge pylon is reserve area (Beachwood mangroves) so don't fish there, but you can walk there to get to where you want to go.

@ fishing adventures, i have been trying to get a grunter on drop shot for the past 3 years but dint even have a take! any advise would be highly appreciated. oh and i have tried sight fishing plenty of time.

Probably fairly quickly...middle of next week or so- which also co-incides, quite well, with a favourable afternoon spring tide which should have some fish with it.

Hi Salty,

Here is the thing where everyone gets it wrong.

Lots of people only want to fish a sping tide or day after full moon etc. and whilst this may have some truth there is a lot more to consider. Fish feed everyday, not just on this days and each fish has its best windows of opportunity according to certain circumstances. You also need to understand how the fish feeds, when it feeds and what it feeds on to be able to taget it more succesfully.

GRUNTER

They like to feed on small living organisms.

They feed on these living organisms by blowing into the sand to get these organisms out and then eat them

They like to feed on shallow banks on an incoming tide as the water starts coming up, and feed best when this happens at sunset early evening.

This is for drop shot and fly

These waters are very shallow and the fish very skittish so extreme stealth and casting accuracy is needed.

Smaller lures with light weights are best and I mostly use 1/16 and 1/32 jig heads or even std hooks or circle hooks with split shot. For flys a sinking line and small crazy charlies work best and you can even use the crazy charlies on your drop shot rig with split shot.

Pic your spot and stand dead still, do not move your feet, cast around you by twisting your torso.

When you see the fish tailing cast past them 2m or so and then let the line settle before retreiving OR even better cast out where you thnk there will be a fish and then wait till the fish gets there and then retreive.
