The 12 annual Bloemhofdam Bonanza was held on weekend 27-29 April. This was the biggest Bonanza ever to be held at Bloemhof Dam with 2000 anglers participating in good weather condititions. The wind was quite strong on Friday, but Saterday unntill Sunday was very pleasant. The dam was almost 70% full which provided ample banks for the bank anglers spreaded over 30km along the Sandveld and Northwest shores. A good numer of boat anlers also participated. The size and number of fish caught was slightly smaller and less than previous years. The biggest barbel was caught by Jan Nel and weighed 20,8kg. The biggest carp caught weighed 8,1kg and was caught by Mike Babich.
The overall winner, for the most points on the ECT angling table, of R100 000 was Gerrit Strydom (bank angler), with a total off 1790,8 points. He caught a barbel of 16,1kg and carp of 7,23kg. According to the ECT angling table you scores slightly less for a fish caught from a boat. There are tables for carp and barbel. The tables take the sizes of the fish found in the dam into consideration.
Jan Nel (boat) came second averall with a barbel of 20,8kg and carp of 6,14kg total points 1709,7points. A lady, Matilda Erasmus (bank), came thits overall with a barbel of 16,86kg and carp of 6,08kg total points 1703,2 points.

More than 50 prizes was allocated which place the tournament in its own class. Spar has indicated that after 10 years as the naming right sponsor, that they withdrawn (something that happens in any sport). The organisers and participants will miss Spar sponsorship. Spar good for you!
