Where at Bloemhof will you be fishing ?

Tip on Bloemhof - baware of the wind !!

Baiting tips: Anything wil produce (and produce good). I did reply to a thread ( http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=3801&forum_id=3) about a basic set-up. Use it, it works - as soon as you start complicating things you will just get frustrated.

Rig: Sliding Rietvlei (is you fishing Sandvelde - one hook only)
Hook baits: Floatie and Dough and you can also do mielie only
Dip: Lemon / FX / Petite Janine

Sorry forgot about this info:

Hooks
No 1, 2 & 3 Daiichi

Weights
M00, M0, P0, P1 and P1.5

Distance
Winter - 90 to 150m
Summer - 30 to 110m
Tough times - one deep - one close until you find the fish

General Remarks
Bloemhof Dam has a lot of carp and catfish. Muddies and yellows are hard to come by. It is important to establish a feeding spot by casting at least five bombs in a tight proximity at the beginning of your outing. Concentrate with at least one rod on this spot and soon you will battle to keep two lines in the water.

Catfish can be caught from late August until the end of April with September being the hot month. Best times for catfish are from 5 in the afternoon, through the evening until 8 the next morning. Coldish overcast days during the summer will keep them reasonably active during the day. Make sure to tackle up or catfish as there are some monsters in this dam.

Hey Jacques

You are a walking encyclopedia on carp fishing mate.I really appreciate it.

You mentioned in your one article about not using any dips but rather use the same dip in your bom.DOes it really chase the fish away?

I got meself 2 readymade rigs.they both looks like the one in your picture. But then you mention something about using one hook at Sandveld. Now we are going to be camping aout on the opposite side of Sandveld across the dam.Do you know where I am talking about? If you are at Sandveld and if you cast, you will be casting on the opposite side of the dam.I have never been there so I don't know the area.

Should I still use the same rigs which I bought which has 2 hooks or should a make one with a spring with one hook.

What bait should I use for catfish and do i have to cast out far or close by.I have stories of guys catching them on chicken liver, etc. Is this an urban legend or do they really catch them on it.Mate, the liver woul be more usefull in my pot than in the hook lol.

I have red floaties. Will it work?

Cheers

A to Q1:
Yes - to much DOES chase the fish (with the exception of FX). So when diping the bom small earbud thin stripes. Do not dip your hookbait.

A to Q2:
You are refering to Nature Reserve side. There you use the 2 hooks ==> nee wat - dis mo3r ver to the Sandvelde bank. you mentioned 2 rigs - go get at least 8 more.

A to Q3:
Catfish: get yourself earthworms. You can also use a small carp/muddie head (200g fish max). Beat it a bit and bait up as per sea. Minumum line 15lb. 60- 80 meters will be fine for catfish. Chicken livers will work but there ain't no bait like a juicy fishhead for catfish. Sardines will also work.

A to Q4:
Red floaties will work, but try get white ones as well.

Do not forget the can of Koo mielies (whole kernel)

Thanks Jacques

You mention "Yes - to much DOES chase the fish (with the exception of FX)."Excuse my ignorance here but what is FX?

You mean those 2 rigs will not be enough?ok will get more.

When rigging up for catfish, does one have to use a heavy sinker? Will a sardine head work?

Ok,will get some white floaties as well.

I have those kernals which comes in a bottle which i bought. Will that be fine.how many of them kernal do I put on the hook?

Jacques,I really don't know how to thank you mate for taking the time out to give me these advices.

So when r we going to do some yellow fishing.I usually go to Woelwaters which is next to Arends Nes.We must hook up sometime.

FX is a dip (balldip) widely available at any tackle shop and does not have chemicals in it. (Caramel Dip) - you can make it yourself but don't waste the time (I am lazy and rather buy it).

I would not go heavier than 2.5 oz on the sinker for catfish - when the fish is hooked and the sinker is to haevy you might loose the fish while it head jolts. Believe me the catfish in Bloemhof are strong fighters. Sardine head will do fine.

They will work fine. not more than 2. pot them on the hook via the small tip and out the fat end (natural presentation)

Nice cat there, and it's good to see that Bloemhof is keeping up its reputation of rather large fish, well larger than most of the dams close by to JHB and PTA anyhows.

Just one thing to add, Garrick shouldn't be surprised if he gets picked up by Carp on the earthworms, specially if they're dipped in sweet strawberry.

Hi Guys

Nice Catfish.I was at Sandveld for 2 nights recently and the fishing was hectic. We sat about 1,5km from the bridge. With the rising water level, the watergrass was a bit of a problem as you need to wade fairly deep to land your fish. The catfish were very quiet and there was only 1 of about 10kg that was caught closer to the bridge. We dropped our lines +-180m and the sizes ranged between 3,5kg and 6kg. Plain mielies worked well. Enjoy

fx is essential at bloemhof, aswell as a good sweet white dough and perdeby ofcours.Dont be scared to let fly when trowing you cant go wrong.

my combinations for bloemhof are

top hook- sweet dough with cinnamon float

bottom hook- plain floati + white dough +plain mielie

bol-kaapse lok mixed with gummy mix and supercast

dips- perdeby & caramelix

bol dips-lots of fx with drop of gumtree (not to much)

shake everything in s.a.powder

first 5 throws with s.a. powder after that only every 6th or 7th throw
