Black mussel as bait?

Hi All

I need some info regarding black mussel as bait.

Once i used it in langebaan, as my prawn was running out. I picked up a mussel and tried it. About 5min. after my cast i was on and landed a nice sized 'blou kop'.

This got me thinking, as in the past when i caught bank fish i found black mussel in there stomachs.

Guys, how do you preserve it or is it only to be used fresh and has anyone had success on a regular basis?

Commercials in Langebaan mostly use black mussel. They don't have time to pump prawn.

They go past the mussel floats and get some and will chum a lot by throwing the mussels on the side of die boat.

The Galjoen we catch at cape point usually have small crushed black mussles in their stomaches, we have tried it once or twice but the white mussle and wonder worm usually works better

I think i will continue using the mussel, but not as a primary bait, i will try combination's with it at different levels of the tides. I think low tide is best time.

I'm hoping to go to the water tomorrow, going to target Galjion @ Wolfgat\Bird sanctuary.

Only ever had success with Bloukoppe and odd Hottie with black mussel

Some of my mates here on the West Coast only throw B/mussel for galjoen and with great success.Myself have tried fresh ones often with success ,galjoen ,hottie and a lot of White Stump - there were days I outfished my mates using prawn!

However ,W/mussel,Wonderworm and prawn are always my first choice ,should nothing happen then I will start looking for fresh B/mussel.

Thanks Weskus wurm, i will keep on trying it and keep you updated. Have not been too the water in a while, ( 3 weeks, work!!!), should be going next weekend.
