Without trying to hijack this thread (sorry Walt), but what head-light is the "preferred" among anglers? My own light didn't survive our recent trip to Angola and I'm in the market for a new one. My last one wasn't any good anyway, so I'm looking for something better. Any suggestions? Is that Diamond brand good, Walt?

Black Diamond Brand?It was a gift,but I don't use it,still as new, & was thinking of putting it on the market.
It's too good for me,and more than I'd ever need,but I can't fish at nites owing to priorities.With the battery pack at the back,it lasts longer than normal lites,and is far brighter.
It has different settings,where you can switch over to Full Flood light(If U check pic,you'll see big lamp & 2 smaller lites),where all sources click in simultaneously.Other option is just smaller lites for economy purposes.Then there's the 2 smaller lites in flashing mode for walkingcycling,etc,in places where you need to be intermittently visible to other anglers,or cars,etc.
I've probably used it once,and not even sure how to still use it,but you're welcome to check it out.I have 6 or 7 nitelites I bought in case we ran out of Prizes for 2008 Birthday Bash.I Have been meaning to them put them up for sale,as just about all still new,unused.Most are the Energizers,which is more than adequate for my needs.

Here is one of the best under R1000 on the market in my opinion. Not only is it more than bright enough (trophy KT and the rest saw it in PE), the main factor here is the burn time, especially if you use the Energiser Lithium Batteries with it, it's even longer.

I am also in the market for another headlamp..
I have about 4 units at the moment ranging from the high quality and expensive Petzels to an el-cheapo major tech unit..
All have a purpose but none the purpose I now need to fulfill. I need a unit with a superb beam and that said I have to say the LED LENZA has impressed me!! Trophy has one and let me tell you it is INTENSE !! Off the end of that pier it must look like a lighthouse to vessels at sea! This is my next unit unless I can be convinced that there is something better on the market..
The Black Diamond unit looks sweet and if that beam gets up to 25m and further I may want to take it off your hands Walt. So let me know when you decide to post it..

Bought extra nitelite/headlamps on my own Tab/Account for CT Sealine 2008 B/Day Bash in case we ran out of prizes.Lots of unused stuff & unless I grow an extra 7 heads overnite,I've got no use for them and will be putting them up for sale sometime when i get around to it.

My name is Simon and I run a company that imports & distributes outdoor gear. I would like to answer some of the questions asked - but am conscoius of not wanting to contravene the code of this forum - i.e. no advertising !
Please bear with me.
Question 1 - Walt - the light depicted is an old Black Diamond Zenix IQ. It had a 1 Watt LED with current regulation - but has now been superceeded by new models. The closest replacement would be a Black Diamond Spot - which will give a much brighter light (1 Watt - 70m throw). You could expect to pay around R450 for this unit.
The unit depicted by Marthin is the Black Diamond Icon - which is a step up from the Spot - 3 Watt (100m throw) - retails for around R690.

Question 3 : Kaspaas - a good head lamp ? Ultimately, there are a number of good brands on the market - and it depends on your needs as to which unit will serve you best. Generally we give fishermen the following pointers :
1. waterproofness - given the environment you are dealing with, waterproofness is a good idea. You don't need to dive with it, but it should withstand the occasssional drop in the water, or increased moisture due to sea spray etc. So look for a lamp that meets a minimum of IPX 4 (splash proof) or even better IPX7 (submerge to 1m). The Princeton Tec range (www.princetontec.com) is probably the best from this point of view due to their background as dive torch manufactures.
2. durability - a durable headlamp will give you better value for money because it will handle a bit of abuse. Waterproofness also come into this becuase a lamp that lets in water will allow th batteries to corrode.
3. distance of light thrown - if you are fishing off the rocks you may need to see where your line has gone and so you may need a a through of 70 or 100m. If you are just doing the occasional walk back from the beach - a 20m broad throw may do the trick. Generally, the more power the more expensive the headlamp.
4. battery life : if you want to to spend serious time night fishing - you want to know that your light is gonna go the distance. there are a number of lights out there which give serious output - but they drain the batteries in a couple of hours. These days, with LED technology - you should be able to get at least 50 hours on high power from a good lamp. If you are not getting this - what you saved on the purchase price is gonna cost you in batteries.
One of the new developments is rechargable LiIon batteries (aka Cell phone) which allow the headlamps to be plugged in & charged like you do a cell phone. This techonlogy is available as an optional extra for the Icon. Balck Diamond has also built it in standard to their Sprinter. Unfortunately this technology is still pretty expensive and will only pay you if you are tired of spending money on regular batteries.
5. finally - if any one would like to read more on the issue - I invite you to join www.on-the-edge.co.za which is a "facebook-style" community for all outdoor enthusiasts. You can blog, put up pictures, video etc. We would love to have the fishing community participate. I am reluctant to pay more than R350-R400 for a light as I don't fish that much at night. I'll probably have to compromise between the various cost and value factors and decide on something that meets my requirements.
I don't want to knock some of my fellow anglers but sometimes buying a Trinidad or Saltiga reel at great cost to catch Galjoen while a "lowly" Daiwa SL or Simano Speedmaster would do just as well, just does not make sense to me. LOL
