Friday morning at 4am,me and a fishing buddy left for Bivane dam situated 160kms from Pongola to go and and see if we could manage to catch some bass in the cold,as we left Pongola the temp droped from a steady 20'C to 9'C as we arrived at the dam at 6am the jackets and beanies came to good use!!!!
The boat we fished on was a Bass Splash with a 60hp Mariner on,any bass angler will love this boat,light,fast and spacey.This was the first time we went together and he fish the dam on a regular basis and know where to find the fish even in difficult conditions,we started off fishing with small plastics but no luck,tried to fish the shallows but still nothing,then we decided to go and work the one of the many steap dropoffs in the dam where the bottom drops from 35 to 80ft and not long after we arrived there the first fish got hooked on a 3"Senko rigged Texas style,not huge but the account was open at last,it was a fish of 1,05kgs and the other guy caught some smaller fish to,about 4 or 5 of them and i still struggled to program my "Crank-Crazy" brain to fish slow down,something to get use to!
After a few hours with no luck we decided to move to the river section of the dam,i changed to a overseized tube to get those Big Mommas to eat a last snack before the real cold settle in!We fished in about 35ft of water when i felt a very slight tap on my line at first i thought it's the rocky bottom but the line went stiff and i slammed on the breaks,after a short fight i landed a nice 1,5kg fish in very good condition,not big by any means but my first fish in deep,cold water on a "big dam",the day wasnt a great succes but i enjoyed it very much!
