Birding Barbel

Yes seen them do it to weaver nests... grab the whole nest suck out what's inside and next you see the weaver nest drift past....

Live birds do work wonderfully, the ethics/legality is another debate

In a slow flowing river, if you happen to "klop" from a cano around weaver nests you better have a serious reel on the rod with very strong line or lose more than you land.

Have seen this a few times...only with comorant. Usually the barbel cruise around shallow rocky islands that are full of comorant. They swim extremely shallow, sometimes their whole body is half way out of the water. When a comorant enters the water close to them they instantly grab it, but usually they are too small to swallow it - then they just hold on and drown it and then eats it. They only do this in dams with very little fishing pressure.
