A new initiative, we can see first hand with the swordfish and marlin taken with the longliners.....

The interesting reason is why are they doing this now? Have a look at the latest SportFishing mag and the figures are pretty depressing. They do support however what I have been saying for years. The US will protect its own fishery resources and continue to rape the rest of the world's. They proudly talk about the rebound in swordfish stocks, the 99inch minimum atlantic marlin, the increase in T&R, mandatory circle hook use in tournaments etc - and yet they are still the world's largest net importer of billfish. As for the initiative above, it doesn't extend to swordfish because apparently they are not billfish.
Don't get me wrong, it is a good start and it will bring the attention of the masses to the problem. However, 90% of this imported billfish is not destined for the menu - it is used for pet food and fertiliser. That is the real problem.

Fin-S, Its the smae with most countries. Look at Portugal and Spain. They have some of the worst long line/ purse seiners in the world. They are regulary caught in other countries waters illegally etc and those countries are some of the biggest consumers of sea food int he world, yet they also have some of the best fishing areas around. Think, Madeira, Canaries, Azores etc. They look after these very well as their is other commercial incentives, But rape and pillage everywhere else.
I just wishj all these trawlers/ net boats wouldf decide to visit somalias waters. Could be interesting.

Yep, fair comment. Sometimes I get blinkered by the emotion! As for Somalia, have always wanted to go and try Suqutra (Socatra) - think the rocket launchers on the T-top may need to be the real ones though!
