Bigger Bait Bigger Barbel

Bring your Ideas to the table and explain yourselfs why it's better to use bigger baits ?

I am not Skuimkop but for me the idea is that there are alot more small barbel than there are big ones in any given piece of water, so by using a bait that's too big for the small ones to swallow you take them out of the equation and drastically increase your chances of hooking up with a big fish.

Think of it this way. A big cat is lazy, it takes energy to feed. So it won't want to swim around looking for a lot of small meals. It wants to get its nutrition for the day with the least amount of energy needed. So it will naturally target a bigger bait. But again they are opportunistic so will take what is infront of them, but again one big meal makes more sense than 15 smaller ones. Use the least amount of energy for the biggest gain.

Caught lots of big snorbekke on small baits, but you get one decent one for every 20 or so small ones. Bigger baits mean smaller fish can't take the bait, so I agree with J. Bigger bait = more success on bigger fish because you stop the "rats and mice" eating your bait. It does however lower your overall catch rate though as would be expected. Well worth it if you want that +20kg fish.

So what you guy's are telling me is, me because I go to the Vaal twice month' I got a stand close by Tago I target catz' if I use bigger baits I have more chance of catching bigger cat, but using smaller bait I also have the same chance to catch the big catz but smaller once in the mix as-well !

I alwaysa use two rods for catfish,one with a smaller bait and one with a big bait.small bait wil probably be one day old chick(skinned),fish fillet and big baits will be fish head,two or 3 day old chicks with beef heart as base or live bait.it also depends on what you see as a big catfish,in my opinion anything over 15kg's is big.so use small baits if you want,but u will be very lucky to catch anything over 15kg's on it.the smaller 2-8kg catfish will pick up the bait before anything decent can.

Every on has raised a good point. A bigger bait will lesson the amount of small barbel and increase big barbel. Barbel are oppertunist, as long as the bait has a protien type base you will get a knock. (Hence why people have used soap, some soap is protien based). But you will increase you chances of a bigger cat by using bigger bait, it still comes down to what the fish wants, if you a 100kg oke you will want more food than a 60 kg guy. Its nature, the fish wants to eat bigger meals and less often. But the best way to find out is to try. Find what works for you.

Hi Anthony it is not wrong to use small baits, you will definetly get quicker bait and the smaller catfish will be there first if you are lucky the big one will scare the small ones away and will take a smaller bait presented. In the past i have caught big catfish only on a head of carp or mudfish. Yellow fish in the orange are pleantyfull but not good bait because catfish does not like it and also secondly are endangered.Here in Gauteng carp head chicken and their livers and also fillet of carp and catfish is good and also my own catfish pellets that i made works well with the hair rig method. I prever mudfish or grasscarp because they are oily fish. I also prever to fish with big baits whole mudfish,whole carp sometimes carp up to 3kg. Orange river is totally different its wild and you can use any flesh kind of bait. I caught big catfish on whole carp up to 8 kg cutting it in half using the head and later the end.
Try the big bait and leave it for at least through the night. You will be surprised when the reel is running and doesnt stop then you know it is time for the battle and your heart wants to jump out of your chest when the rod bents.
Try it and let me know when you catch that big one.

ek stem saam met bigger bait bigger fish, dis net n langer wag.eenkeer n hele fisantjie op gesit en hyt my 30kg lyn laat snap soos n sweep(voor ek braid geken het), eers gedink dis n krokodil lol :fst:
is daar groot babers in roodeplaat en watse aas is die beste vir hul :kaykak ek vang met my kayak en is maar nuut hier sal die gesoute oomies se raad baie waardeur

Hi daar

Anthony eerstens hang dit af waar jy visvang in watter dam of rivier en ook waar jy sit maak die verskil in baber hengel Ek dink regtig al ons damme en die vaal het ook baie groot babers. Die mense haak hulle maar hulle is ook slim hul het nie verniet so groot geraak nie. Ek sal se as jy n halwe karp aansit los dit ten minste deur die nag. Ek verkies om babers in die nag te vang sommer teen die kant. Soek vir rietbosse,stompe struktuur die grotes ids ook daar en wees stil baie stil. Jy gaan van hulle verloor maar jy sal van hulle uitkry , soos jy probeer sal jy ook meer ondervinding optel en hulle dan meer gereeld uithaal. Ek gebruik ook net Hi abasion lyn om die groot babers te vang, meeste van die tyd.
Die pellets is maar n morsige proses en jy kan deur eintlik van die boilies te koop wat hulle gebruik vir karp , baie van die boilies het vismeel ens. in en werk goed.
kleur hulle met rooi fluoro as jy wil.
Al die boilies met vismeel in werk gewoontlik. Ek sal eendag kyk of ek die katvis pellets op die mark miskien sal sit. n Mens het tyd nodig om sulke goed aan te pak want dis n groot storie en baie werk.

It's the same principle of using 22mm boilies as that limits the amount of fish you catch and up's the size of your fish you hook because the small ones simply an't eat it.

Yes it's not impossible to catch big cat's on a small appetising bait but you will get a lot of smaller ones and be a lot busier

Ihave pictures but dont have an idea how to put it on. As you seen before i am not very active on the internet as well as Face Book because of not knowing to do things. You are welcome to go to tackle shops in Pretoria there are a few pics of Catfish the 42 kg one and 30kg.
Luckly i know how to put a Emoticon on. As i get more time i will make a plan to be more active on the sites and learn on how to do things on the computer.

Iam trying to put two photos on hope it will show.
25kg and 23 kg the 36 kg and 42kg were taken on 35mm camera so photos is on glass photo paper.
