A mullet is a hairstyle that is short in the front, top, and sides, but long in the back. The hairstyle was popular during the late 20th Century, from the early to mid seventies to the late eighties/early nineties. Mullets have been worn by both males and females of all ages.
The Beastie Boys 1994 song "Mullet Head" made fun of the hairstyle, and a year later band member Mike D discussed the mullet at length in issue 2 of the band's Grand Royal magazine:

I used to wear a mullet till my mid 20's. At that time I started working as a motor mechanic in a workshop with no lifts. Consequently we worked on the floor using creepers to get under the cars. I only had to get the mullet tangled once, OH THE PAIN. On the friday I took my first paycheck and went n got a really old fashioned short back n sides.
