BG 5000 spinning reel line capacity

For the guys That own these reels, is the suggested line ratings accurate on these reels?

In particular, the 40lbs spec.?

Looking to purchase one for spinning off the rocks for yellowtail with 40lbs line, just want to know and get my ducks in a row first with these things...

This will be heavily dependent on what brand of braid you will be going for.
I know that the stated capacity is for Daiwa J Braid so if using that you wont be far off. When using thicker braid like Suffix 832 it will obviously have an impact.

The BG 6500 I have states that it can hold 550 yards of 50lb J-Braid and I managed to fit exactly 600 yards of 40lb suffix 832.

yes it does help...so what I should do is look for something closest to the J braid in diameter etc. Braid is expensive, so I want to make sure i get the optimum. I have too much unused braid lying around due to not being wise!!!!....Thanks...this steers me on the right path.

How accurate these ratings are is debatable. We all know that a spool should not be filled totally to avoid wind knots... Yet manufacturers quote us capacities on full spools.

What they also do is put lines under unnatural tension when they fill the reels to get more line on and quote higher capacities.

So lets deduct 10% for over filling and another 10% for over stating capacity. Then you have a capacity of 352m (80% of the stated) for 40lb braid. If you consider using a lighter braid casting from shore, say maybe 20/30lb it will obviously give you higher capacity.

40lb JBraid has a diameter of 0.32mm

According to the line capacity calculator this means that you will be able to fill 459m of 30lb (0.28mm) braid and 681m of 20lb (0.23mm). This should be more than enough capacity.

Going to be looking to pair it with a Custom built Blackhole nano 106 heavy. Should be , hopefully be a balanced enough set up!

I got 300 meters of 40lb JDB (0.27) braid on with lots of room to spare.
Best is to roll on the 300 meters and add backing on top of that. Then take it all off and turn it over again before winding it back on, this time backing first.
Don't overfill the spool, it just creates the potential for wind knots and you never use all that braid anyway, its a waste.

I am fishing the same length of braid the whole season, after turning the 300 meters over and using the other end at the beginning of last season.

Thanks your input. Sorry for sounding like an amateur, but I am one when it comes to grinders and braids thereon etc. Ive never really had any interest, but, my little fishing heart says I must get one....

I like your plan, and its what I had thought of, to optimally manage the line. A 300m spool of the casting line and then backing of another braid perhaps that is thinner or thicker etc.

My next question would be, when you say you turned it around, was this because the braid was worn? How long should one expect to have a spool of braid last? Obviously depending on the damage from reef and structure.

Very excited for this. new territory and new things to do and experiment with.:)

Something to take into account:

Powerpro's stated dia's and breaking strains bear minimal relation to reality.

Not sure if you are thinking of using the older 4 strand or perhaps the 8 strand Superslick?

The 4 strand 40lb has an actual diameter of 0.36mm and actual breaking strain of 60lb (un-knotted)

I would strongly suggest you look at 8 strand HMP.
1. Cheaper per m
2. Consistent
3. Casts beautifully

Hey Thanks Brandon!!!

Off hand...whats the diameter of the 40LBS HMP? I have it as backing and used it for leaders in the 100LBS version. It is quite durable, that I will say.

That info I don't have (at least not based on mg/foot)
I want to send some samples to the States for testing
But maths says it should be around 0.30mm (not compressed/squashed)

Im very very particuliar on my stuff. I have to somehow get minimum 350m with 400m being perfect!on that reel. Somehow. Perhaps a backing of 30lbs line and the 300m 40lbs HMP? :):)

Do a direct download and you can filter based on dia, stated BS actual BS etc etc

Diameters are CALCULATED based on density of 0.85 for braided PE fibres (extruded PE has a density of 0.97)

My personal feeling is that the results for hollow braids are skewed as they MUST have  a lower density than tightly braided PE
