Hi to all.

I know there are several topics opened about this but none is straight to the point.

Why and where in South Africa can you buy your favourite salt water grease. Two types. Drag and general. The gurus say calcium sulfonate complex. If so where can you get a 500 gram tub without importing it?

Corrosion Block have some quality products.
They have a very good multi- purpose grease, reelfast oil and a aerosol spray that kills corrosion on contact.
I bought it a while back,google it.

I wouldnt bother with other greases other than corrosion block. It covers all aspects. Very good product, tried and tested. By all means, you can use others, any grease will work, but theres no real need, if you maintain your reels as you do and should. The intervals between cleaning is what counts.

My opinion is this,

Cheaper low quality greases = more frequent cleaning intervals.

Good quality, less frequent cleaning intervals.

Corrosionblock aerosol oil is a fantastic product for coating all surfaces and their grease is excellent. Drags.....I use Cal's Universal Reel and Star Drag Grease. I also use a bit of Quicksilver Marine Grease 2-4-C on my gears....by it from a boating shop.

Something ive learnt,

Some greases, that have been formulated, are excellent, the very best against corrosion, but look closely at the intended purposes. These greases, are generally formulated for either sealed units, or, bearings that will run for a very long time without being changed, in harsh corrosive environments.

Our reels, however, are exposed to harsh environments, but due to ingress of seawater, sand etc....need to be maintained more often. So using a better grease, might be good, but can be expensive and or an overkill for our reels.

Heck, you could use copper slip in your reel( Not for drag washers) it will perform just as well, but you will need to clean and replace often.

I recently bought a large range of Shimano greases online to service my reels with. I also use Corrosion Block but only for protecting certain parts of the reel from from sea walter, I don't think it has such great lubricating properties. Cal's grease for carbontex drags.

thank you Grootvis, just gave their site a visit and indeed they sell it. about two years ago i went to their shop while on holiday and asked them for cal's, they only stocked their own kingfisher dragwasher grease and bought it, is it the same thing as cal's? (it looks the same, maybe re-packaged)

yip quality grease is not commonly available.

the marine grease is formulated to break down slower in a salt water environment.
im still looking for some on my trailer axel bearings.

normal grease will work, as grootvis has already indicated.
copper slip is nice and would hold up in our normal day to day, week to week fishing excursions.
