best bait for yellows

That's why I don't use artifitial lures you can't catch one of these in a bass dam. Bassing might be superior but not as exciting just check my last catch at the top

New to the forum and new to yellow fishing (In fact this was my first). Went to Sterkfontein a couple of weeks ago for the first time. it is a stunning dam and the water is crytal clear. I saw numerous yellows swimming close to the shore and landed this one on mielie pip with rietvlei rig. I was actually targetting carp but who can complain?
If you go there try not to fish near the chalets as it's too rocky. The locals inform me that the points and sandy/muddy banks are ideal. As I had a 7 month pregnant wife I didn't want to move far from the chalets.
The fight was excellent and I thought I'd caught at least a 5kg carp!! My estimate of size, having no scale, was close to 2kg.

. I've had a couple of queries w.r.t. the accommodation. I stayed at the nature reserve which is about 23km from Harrismith - full tarr road right up to the chalets. Will post GPS co-ords if anyone needs them. To book or query call them on 0586223520.

For number of catches, not always the biggest, black crickets fished under a float in the river or even in the dam is deadly. For slow moving shallow river water where you can see the yellows as described above, take a bunch of earthworms and thread them so it looks like wrigling mass of worms, cast weightless or with one splitshot. Now it has to "plop" into the water almost like birdsh!t, and not splash, otherwise u'll spook them. Make sure the drag is nice and loose.

Great thread and suggestions - I'm planning on going to the Vaal River and hear there is nice yellow fish there.
