Howzit everyone. I believe that Berkley is about to release a new surf spinning rod, the Eyelash Viper...has anyone seen or heard of info regarding the rod?

Thanks

Would be interesting to hear from the experts how this rod compares to the new Assassin Horizon Zero 15ft range of grinder rods.

Will do. I have a friend who fishes for EP, will get him to give some feedback. I will only be able to use mine end of October.

Had this rod in my hands yesterday, but at nearly R8000, it's really expensive.

Does look and feel very lekker !!

Took it to the dam (I live inland) yesterday to have some test casts paired with a Saragosa 10 000 and 35lbs HMP. I am seriously impressed by the casting ability and distance!! I made a rough calculation of the distance by counting the amount of cranks on retrieve multiplied by the retrieve distance per crank stated on the Shimano website (102cm/crank). I know this is not an accurate calculation and casting inland with only a sinker you get a lot more distance. Next time I’ll take my line counter to get more accurate numbers, before I claim any distances.

I had a throw with both and they are both brilliant rods.

All depends on ones casting action but iv settled for the 15ft Heavy.

(I had a 14ft heavy and loved it to bits)

The eye lash does feel lighter however the 15ft heavy suits my casting style thus the decision to replace the 14ft heavy zero.

Hi guys I've also been eyeing out one of these two rods. Having recently broken the tip of my Berkley Anaconda 15ft L casting a 5oz sinker and octopus leg, I am a bit sceptical of buying the eye lash viper if it cannot withstand a hard cast with a 6oz sinker and a biggish kob bait. Can anyone advise on which rod may be better suited if this is what the rod will mainly be used for? I put my back into it and dont want to break another rod ^^..

I feel your pain broke mine yesterday.

What's the difference between these R7-8000 rods and the R3-R4000 rods?

I cannot think that spending double the price on a rock and surf rod is justifiable from a performance or durability point of view?

You BOTH broke your Anaconda 15L's yes?

Just looking back at Rudolph Scheeper's "review" of the rod back in 2018 where he mentioned he found it was happiest with a 4-5oz sinker and a small bait.
Not 6oz and a big bait
Anaconda 15L is an eds rod rated 2-6oz, not 6-8oz or 7-9oz.

What were you attempting to cast?

Hi Tackle-holic

As mentioned I was casting a 5oz sinker with an octopus leg. I spent R6000 on the rod so I know the specs. I also know of many other broken Anaconda L's. Rudolphs fellow Iron River product ambassador stated on Facebook to another gentleman seeking advice that it "can cast anything from a 6oz with a mackerel head to a 5oz and a tiny chokka bait"

It is the first rod I have broken casting in more than 20 years of fishing and after the kind of after market sales and service I have received I cannot recommend this product to anyone nor any other product from Iron River, unfortunately.

Personally, I will now look at other brands going forward when making such an expensive purchase. Regarding my Anaconda L, though, when I eventually get it back I don't think I will find a better rod for scratching in the reefs for bronze bream and other smaller reef fish. I've found out the hard way that this is what it is best suited for

That really sucks that it broke. At "least" you have  it specced for a specific job now, but still, I'd have been a bit miffed
