Hey there. Most of the tackle shops are out of stock or just dont have nitro jig heads. I know their expensive but are very good.  Where can I order online or get my hands on them. I'm in Pta. Thanks

Bigjoe,

Many of the stores (not all!) are trying to push cheap imitations at a very good profit so are not ordering sufficient Nitro stock. You know mos, the customer will just be obliged to take what is there and even if half the price still make 120% profit in the process.

They think we are all stupid.

Believe even Mias Woodmead could be out of stock, but their branch in Fourways might have. Also try Angling Africa in Centurion who might have. Advice is to call before you drive all the way.

Good luck.

Sorry, but I have to re-post this...... (I don't want to get into the whole debate about being ripped off by shops/distributers etc..., I have my own (educated) opinion based on some hard facts!!!)

I posted this in SW lure Angling section a few months back and it opened a small can of healthy(mostly) debate!!

"Just stopped in at Kingfisher to get a a few heavy jig heads, picked up a pkt of Nitro 2oz. (3 p/pack) and a pkt Nitro 2.5oz, headed for the till and handed over 'the card'........................."that will be R235.00 sir"...........  WTF !!! and WTF again !!

Now I know it is a good product and has Owner hooks and all.......but R115.00 for three 2oz jigheads........ you gotto be outta yor frikkin mind !!!!!!!! 38 bucks each !!! You can buy vertical jigs for that price !!

In the end I got  the Triton for R6.50 a jighead (with a strong 4/0)."

If I had to chose between the two without considering the price I would take the Nitros - even at double the price I would possibly still consider the Nitros......but at SIX times the price......!!!!! You must be kidding!!

Owner hooks are great but no better than Gamakatsu or the better quality Mustads! I would suggest purchasing a mold and making your own. If the cost of the mold seems a bit rich, buy a pack of jigheads of your choice, get the hook size and order a pack or two from Cabelas or Do-It. A mold can be easily made from plaster of paris. There is no way in hell I would pay that price for Nitros when a round head would do the job just as well! Oh, and LJ, I'm not trying to screw any tackle dealers out of anything, just trying to help 'cause times are hard.

I have the product number for Mustad jig hooks.

Do you think I can find any in South Africa????

There goes my order again to the US because its just not available locally.

I saw the price on the Nitro's and first thought it was a misprint and then looked at the 2nd packet and then I had to walk out of the shop because I was laughing out loud.

They are crazy...

For R245.00 I can order 50 4/0 or 5/0 Mustad jig hooks and make my own....

The sad thing is that there are guys paying that price.

Hi DB, welcome back. I hope you were out fishing and not working?

You dont offend me, and I dont disagree with you. I however dont think that you are going to find hooks with an offset "eye", especially the heavier 2-4 oz jigheads, that will allow you to tie on, on top of the jighead, ie keeping the c-of-g lower to ensure a better lifelike swim action.

Perhaps something and an opportunity for an enterprising guy to look into. But then, if it works, will be a couple of months and his prices will also be the same.

I also think the price of jigheads in general are rediculous.  I have tons of old dive weights that I can use to make such jigheads if only I can find suitable hooks with such an offset eye.

Yeah and hooks too. I HATE obscene prices, but when you get guys importing premier Japanese hooks (and they are buying FOREX in USD, to then onward buy in YEN)....and you then bring them into SA, pay VAT and then onward resell them to the retail trade, who then markup for resale to the public......the prices get OBSCENE!!!! Shite! It's a long, expensive and very convoluted foodchain.......

$17.50 for a pack of 25....... in sizes up to 5/0... thats just the very first search and first click of the mouse....

No doubt 6/0 and up to 8/0 will be easy enough to find....

Proof again that the cost of some items has nothing to do with anything but greed on some peoples part....

LJ - I know you agree with me mate, about the outrageous costs of some things... we both have the same thoughts on "They think we all stupid" so this is not directed at you bud... Just wanted to show that finding the hooks is pretty easy....

I agree with LJ in saying that its a prime area for someone enterprising to take it on... you can get these made up for you in the east on Gamas or Owners, for CHEAP....

Hey-ya guys. Just want to add to all of this that here in Richards Bay we get some monster Kingies so I personally prefer to fish with Owner hooks on all my jigheads. I agree that the prices is ridicules but what you guys have been mentioning is absolute CRAZY!

I only fish with owner hooks as they are the best. Only thing is I get away by paying about R15 to Max R18 for a pack of three. Most jigheads are imported and is charged by weight. Lead is heavy so the price will be as well, however, there is a local oak that makes these jigheads with imported owner hooks and original South-African lead. This makes it affordable for you and me to fish with one of the worlds leading brands!:first

P.S. - If anyone wants to know if they work well, please see my photos posted all over Sealine.

Hi all

On a slightly different tack...do you guys who have extensive drop shot experience find that, with the triangular boat shaped lead heads your minnows spin in circles, while on round jig heads they track beautifully? Lately I seem to have endless problems with lures doing like huge 360 degree spins when I retrieve them erratically for kingies.

Have any f you had the same problem? I know I'm rigging the lure correctly, straight and true.

Advice please.

Try arrow jigheads, they GLIDE through the air (like an arrow:))

It is the first one on my post above. I use them almost all the time.

They are made by Custom Baits and will set you back at R15 for Three, not bad hey.

Just as proof

Yup, I don't like them triangular jigheads they don't swim well. The good 'ol ball or arrow/torpedos are the deal. The biggest issue with jigheads is the retainer. I like the Berkley style multiple ridge retainers - even better are the TT jigheads produced in Aus. The ones with the barb tend to bugger up the plastics.

LJ, I've been casting jigheads for quite a bit now and obtaining hooks is absolutely no issue. Do-It, Cabelas, Bass Pro and many others stock a mind boggling variety of hooks. Tin plated Eagle Claw jighooks from $8 per 100 - now that's what I'm talking about! Hell, you can even buy molds and plastic to cast yer own soft lures!

Download the catalog from this site and blow your mind: http://www.barlowstackle.com

I must agree they hold better and the softbaits last much longer. Mustad also make a nice jighead and the weight centre is well below the hook shank. The hooks are not that strong though. They are perfect for light tackle.
