A friend and I bought this line and used it for offshore spinning purposes merely as a test.  I have always been a "Suffix braid freak" and it must have been a moment of weakness that I decided to try this line. After a weekends fishing with it, my opinion is that as long as you tie your knots correctly, it is fine. I did notice that it is easier to cast with and distances are very good. At a guess I would say it does cast a little further than braid but not by much.                                                                              A friend of mine who fishes with a Penn Battle and who originally had suffix braid on his reel decided very reluctantly to try it as well after having lost an entire spool of suffix braid from wind knots. We blamed the reel, rods eyes and rod etc.   I suggested to him to try the Nanofil and see what the outcome was.  He had nothing to lose as he was about to retire the reel for good as he had no confidence with this reel or combination. Well he did lose a bit of line in the beginning perhaps from too much line on the spool. As soon as we cut the line down a bit the wind knots stopped. He will never use anything else from now on. From someone who has struggled with braid and wind knots to now where you have to beg him to get out the water, it’s been a huge success for him. One thing that I have not tried is this line in an around structure. I am not convinced there yet.

I have a 9 foot Berkley and a Shimano Spheros with nanofil on it. It casts a one ounce jig head with any plastic on it a country mile. I absolutely love that combination for the surf. It is light and you can cast all day with it.

I have Nanofil spooled on my Ultegra 8000 and going to try it out this weekend.

I have made a bimini on the nanofil and used uni knots to connect my mono leader to the nanofil

Hope it works

I also have the 9' Berkley Air paired with a penn battle 4000 spooled with suffix and the windknots are endless, If the knots stated above work well, I will spool my battle with 12lb nanofil

Any other ideas??

After a lot of destructive testing of knots, I concluded that nanny line doesn't like a bimini. It could be that I was making dodgy biminis but I broke off too easily with all my attempts. I've settled now on the doubled nanofil into an albright. I do about 4 turns up and and about 10 back down. Cinch it very carefully up, lots of lube. Single strand albright seemed fine when I made it, but pulled (not snapped) on a small geet :(

The last one I had to break off when my spinner hooked up on rocks was impressive.

The trick we found with wind knots and more specifically with the Penn Battle is that when you get a wind knot, dont try and get it out. If you have enough line on the reel rather cut it at the wind knot. I think somewhere there is a happy balance for this reel. When we got to this point with my friends reel, he did not get one wind knot after that. The amazing thing is that he has a Daiwa excellor and a Daiwa 8 foot rod and never has had a wind knot with this combination.                                    Check out "Berkley Nanofil" youtube for knots. I used that knot that they recommend and never once lost a fish or a lure. I never changed the knot at all during a wekends fishing and it worked for me. In saying that I will be very reluctant to use this nylon around ledges or off an island like Mazeppa. I just dont have enough confidence with it yet, I reckon I will be a nervous wreck if I hook a decent Yellow Tail and it heads for structure.

Thanks for the headsup, I will test the current knot here at home before I go, If it fails I will try out your method as well!

Will keep you guys posted

Gentlemen, google Berkley Nanofil, there is a demo on the knot the angler uses.

I have been using this knot for a few months now and no problems.( Uni-knot 7 turns with the Nanofil to 4 turns with the Leader) Small tip, when you are pulling the two together, go slowly.

Just make sure your FluoroCarbon leader diameter is close to the diameter of the Nanofil Braid.

Eg: Nanofil 12lb (0.008mm) to FluoroCarbon: 24lb (0.415mm) any thicker and the knot won't bind, it will pass right through.

Just for a basic comparison. Nanofil vs Fireline. I'm getting one of the 2 tomorrow.

(Sorry for the HIJACK)

I use both and I love them both. If I were to draw a simile to cars, I'd say that Fireline is the diesel bakkie with low down grunt while Nanofil is the nimble "turbo" running on nitro... a lot more finicky but with potentially awesome performance if you set it up right.

I have one reel loaded with fireline and one with nanny and depending on how I feel at the time determines which reel I put on.

@ Moyeni, spot on, though I still prefer the slickness of an albright. It's thin and smooth. I don't cast my leader through the guides but I prefer the movement of an albright through the water rather than the blob that a uni in mono material makes. Different strokes for different folks but you are quite correct. It's a strong connection.

I use nanofil for spinning and find it doesn't handle the friction with the guides well - brand new Fuji k series. Before every session I'd cut the top 2m of line off.

The uni knot described above works well but all things considered I found the best solution was actually to use a tiny power swivel or even better a micro ring from the specimen carp section. Palomar the nanofil to the ring, uni the floro to the ring. Considerring that its not ideal casting the leader knot through the guides all day the above method was a quick, easy and strong compromise.

I agree one hundred percent with your recommendations regarding a power swivel etc. You don’t need to have a leader that passes through your guides. Shorten the leader so that the knot does not have to pass through the guides. It has always worked for me and it saves your guides. Never has a guy stood next to me and caught more fish because his leader is longer than mine.

The question now is why put up with Nanofils crap when braid gives less hassle and by all accounts is stronger. I have thought about this and the only answer I can give is that it firstly seems to guide through the eyes of the rod so easily and by doing that with less friction it seems to get me a little extra distance. I am confident that if i need to get to the next gutter I can, because of that extra distance. Secondly to see my mate in the water fishing more and spending less time on the beach sorting out wind knots tells me that there must be something right with this line.

Hi all. Would you guys know the recommended casting distance for drop shot fishing from the shore and off the rocks. One for anything that could be caught in and after the surf and two for those rock species. Thanks

Not sure if I understand what you asking here, but If this helps, then use it. When you fishing offshore and you about chest deep in the surf you really don't need to cast to the ends of the earth. There is no precise yardage. You need to hunt for holes, drop offs. They can be a long way out or very close. Usually they are not that far off, but that depends on the tide and size of the sea. We were fishing in the surf a couple of months back and we were catching cob standing waist deep and casting into a hole that was about 50 meters in front of us. We were hooking them at about 20 meters in front of us. They were following the lures close by. This is where you have to be patient and never pick up your lure too soon. I hooked one cob about 6 meters from me.

On the rocks if you have a plug don't cast into the wide ocean but rather behind the waves if you looking for game fish. Game fish always feed behind the backline and that’s where you will catch a lot of Garrick and Yellow Tail. The lighter the plug, the better. If you have wind behind always go lighter. The chop on the sea makes that plug come alive and the Garrick become mesmerized. Have see too many guys with heavy tackle and 3 ounce plugs catching nothing because their plug is to heavy and does not replicate a wounded/ fleeing fish. The lighter plug, balanced rod and reel will almost get you as far as someone with heavy tackle. Hope this helps.
