I'm going to Beaverlac this weekend with the fam. Desperate to hook some bass. Has anyone out there fished that area? Is there good water at Beaverlac itself or should I be looking elsewhere?

I plan to to be spinning and using 2inch flukes. Sound right?

It's about an hours walk as far as I can remember. If you have a mountainbike this will help a lot - just stash it in the bushes where the path starts heading down. Sometimes they operate a unimog to take people to the river and back - I think this is mostly during holidays.

when you get to the river, go left to Langgat, I think it's called. Otherwise put you hiking shoes on and head to the right. Look on google earth for the holes. Lots of bushwhacking and whatch out for the cobras!

Thanks guys!

I was afraid it might be one hell of a schlep getting to the river!!

Is it worth it though? ......I sure hope so

What about the Ratel river and the swimming holes closer to the campsite (I think it's accessible on what they call the Leopard Trail) ? Anyone tried these or are they not worth it?

I'm feeling "Visverskrik" too....like your online name ...... especially knowing what a great weekend it's gonna be on the sea. Gotta get a few bass to ease the pain of being inland this weekend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Bongi, When I was there last you were not allowed fishing those rivers, then again some cammo gear and a pool out of the way and nobody will see you, but I haven't fished those rivers so can't help you there. I did the walk to the Olifants and as will101 said go to langat, you can't miss it, you will get fish. Yes a Mountain bike helps a lot, all in all it's a awesome place fishing or not. Enjoy.

Hi, The ratels river does not have any bass and access to this area is controlled by Beaverlac.

So, for anyone who's interested ............heres how it was.

Awesome setting for camping with family. Truly spectacular swimming holes and pools close to campsite and even better ones a bit further up the Ratels river. No fishing is allowed in the Ratels and I don't believe it holds any worthwhile fish anyhow.

The fish are at the Olifants river. It is a moerse big Hike getting there. Really far and the last bit is seriously steep -- like rock climbing steep.. All downhill getting there and all uphill on the way back. I figure I did more than 20 km's hiking to go hook a few. The view up the kloof from the look out point is beyond description --- like the gates to heaven . But access to the river is very limited because of serious overgrowth/ flood debris and HARDCORE bushwacking is required.

Having said that, I did have a blast!!!!!! I caught 9 fish in just over 3 hours on the river. Not exactly caning it , but at least I caught after such a heavy hike. They were consistently big bass, biggest bass I ever caught! Some sections were crystal clear and you could see the fish ....beautiful..... and swimming in the river to retreive wind up's in the trees on the other side was actually a pleasure .I would have liked to be more prepared and spend the whole day.

So, to sum up. You gotta be prepared to get bruised, scratched and beaten up to go fish there, but if you are , you won't be sorry. The fish are there ....and they're big. Be careful if you're on your own.......if you can't make it out ( for whatever reason) I'm afraid you'r f---ed !!

Sorry guys. My camera ran outta battery before I even got to Porterville (Doos!)

I'd remembered the waterproof housing and all , but forgot the power.

Almost as bad as Visverskrik forgetting his matches!!
