BAZARUTO - MARLIN SEASON 2011

The charter on Saturday fished a full day but wanted to mostly target game fish. The yellowfin action is still wild and the guys had some fast action in the morning.

Just before noon they caught a bonito in 40 meters out of V mile and decided to live bait. Ten minutes later they had a strike and hooked up to a nice 700 plus fish. The fish come undone 20 minutes later and looking at the bait it seems the fish had it in it’s stomach all the way and the circle never found any corner.

They worked a bit south but things were slow until one of the bait rods started screaming and a big sailfish jumped out. Unfortunately the fish was gut hooked and could not be revived…it weighted a whooping 58 kilos.

Later in the day they worked further north to the lighthouse area where they once again found some good game fish action and finished the day off with a Black Marlin released of about 200 pounds.

Yesterday they again found some yellowfin in the early morning and had two shoots at Marlin on the half-day charter. Again they pulled the hooks on a big fish but did manage to release one of about 300 lbs. Both fish on lures and again deep off VI mile.

Surprisingly nice to see such good numbers of fish, especially in such green water conditions and in what is normally considered late in the season. But that might just be a pre conceived wrong notion as no one really seriously targets Marlin after December.

Obviously you will not catch them if you don’t fish for them.

The fact is that the few years we have fished into January we have always found some good Marlin fishing and it seems this is no fluke. If you remember when we did find guests wanting to target them we had great marlin fishing up until March and even May last year.

I am in Vilankulos and supposed to fly to the island tomorrow to do a group starting on the 19th. Problem is that due to a tropical system in NW Madagascar that is predicted to grow into a cyclone the forecast from the 18th is not great….well that is an understatement, we looking into 6 meter swell, 40 knot plus wind and much needed rain like no tomorrow!

Having a 2M on the beach yesterday and this local comes pass me on his bicycle with this nice GT caught on the south point of magaruque.

After some down time with the resort pretty quiet there are finally some guests around and the boys been fishing a bit the last couple weeks in some flat calm conditions...

There as been loads and loads of Yellowfin tuna around and that is what the boys have been reporting on fish up to 34 kilos. But this last week was exceptional for this time of the year...besides the excellent game fish some billies come in for an added bonus...

A month before they should be showing up in big pods, sailfish are already here in fairly good number and VAMIZI went 8 for 14 this last week in three half days.

Better still is there are still a good number of Marlin around and Vamizi went 3 for 5 on Black Marlin!!!!

Makes you wonder what the numbers would be if the boys were specifically targeting them!!!

Hey Duarte, nice to get this news now. We are plannning to be at Vilan from the 12th to 20th April, so I am excited to get this feedback, and so glad to know sailies are there already.

As I fish mostly the south of the Archipelago, I want to this time round go bit towards Baz area as well. We really want to target fish on artificials (stick baits, poppers etc), and would really appreciate some pointers (coordinates) for areas in your neck of the woods. I heard there is this sand island (only on high tide) and that sounds really exciting. Can you be so kind as to part with some coordinates........u can mail or PM me eran.wilson@senwesmalawi.com I would really appreciate, and just for the record, we maintain almost 100% tag & release. Also have the ORI kits on board.

we did get 2 doggies (not massive fish - 15kg, but also lost some spoolers) jigging deep (140m) in December on reef East of Canyon........but keeping these close to my heart.

We also got 2 striped bonito on thtis reef, and if you go and research, you will see that the above also reside in similar habitat to doggies. They actualy look similar. The Striped Bonnie has teeth like the diggie........

Hey Eran,

Yeah, doggiea are a mystery here but they are around and if you fishing deep you will find big fish where you find the smaller one's. I got a spot I catch them frequently enough, but just babies of around 5-10 kilos...amazingly this area sits in 30 meters of water.

However we have found another place that sits between 90 to 140 where we have found some bigger fish and were cut off by what I believe were very big doggies.

Hey Sealiners,

Just to let you guys know that apart from the normal charters based out of Indigo Bay, this coming season I will also be running charters using a 47ft yacht / mothership as a base out of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time as I believe that for a bunch of guys (not so good with the family) this scenario is hard to beat.

The versatility that gives you to move around the archipelago and start the day in a given spot and finish somewhere else is unparallelled.
And, having that ice cold 2 M at sunset while anchored out at sea on a comfortable Yacht after a hard day at sea fighting big Marlin is of course, what dreams are made of.

The other big plus is that because accommodation on the yacht is considerably cheaper than at the Island resorts, less fuel is used due to shorter runs to the fishing grounds (you are right there) and not having to pay the exorbitant prices for air transfers to the islands make this a much more affordable option.

As usual fishing will be done on our 31ft Sportfisher, VAMIZI.

We still have available dates for the mothership option anytime between the;

10 – 16 September

28 September– 10 October
