Orange River trip

There are still a few spots left for the trip to the Orange River in March 2014.  The dates are 19th March to 23rd March (Wed to Sunday) although may have to travel on the 18th (Tuesday) and overnight depending on where you are coming from.

Cost is R 4950 for the 4 nights.  This is for fishing, accommodation and food.  What is not included in the price is transport there and back, any alcohol (bring your own) or soft drinks (can buy there if necessary) and tackle (they have a small shop for anything that you may have forgotten or extra flies).  Also excluded is a tip - on our last trip we paid 10% of the cost, i.e. R 495 per person.  Closer to the time we’ll sort out transport.  There is not a lot of kit that one needs to take so four or five in a car or SUV is fine.  I would envisage a fuel bill per person of somewhere in the range of R 700 or R 800.

Fishing Report

What a fantastic summer season shore-based anglers have had so far.  The shore-based, big-game stuff like Blacks, Sandies and Honeys which have been around in abundance, with some really good fish being caught sparking some interesting debates about whether to be fishing with a grinder and braid outfit, or mono and a multiplier outfit.  The one thing that is for sure is that the grinder and braid route is not for sissies.  It is definitely a whole lot more intense than handling fish like Sandies and Blacks on mono.   I think we are still going to see a lot of really good summer action over the next three or four months.

Off-shore has also been a very good year for Billfish, Tuna and some really good Couta.  The abundant rains have obviously had a big effect and the general feeling is that we are in for a good Couta season between now and June.

On the spinning side, it has been fantastic with some good GT’s, Blacktips, even a Garrick in late December and the big Shad still seem to be around with the occasional Springer and I even heard of a 5kg Stumpie caught at Glenashley on the CID Slimbait.   Snoek have now started to make a strong appearance with a few good ones hooked and lost and a couple of smaller ones coming out.

Durban Bay has been outstanding with lots of Kingies, Sea Pike, the odd Snoek, Grunter and piles of flat fish.

Till we talk again, have some awesome fishing!
