The best place close to PTA is Harties.
To catch a big barbel you must use a big bait.
I use a whole carp +/- 2kg hook in the head section (10/0)
use a breakaway sinker/stone/sparkplug on a very light line just to hold your policeman in place.
Before you drop the bait take a sharp knife and slit the guts halfway to release the juices to attract the big one.
