i fished leeukop on firday and was lucky enough to witness a full on spawning session, there must have been over 1000 barbel spawning in the shallows, even coming right up onto the banks it was insane, my mate caught a 4 kilo in my landing nett, it was that easy lol,, anyway back tot he point, i wanna know if barbel do a post spawn feed to fatten up after laying eggs ect and i also wanna know how long they spawn for , cuase god knows they wont touch a bait while spawing, i wanna go again on friday but i dont wanna pitch to a dam crawling with spawing barbel, i wanna get stuck in with a hook and line,, any info would be greatly appreciated, ryan maybe you can lend a hand, i know they spawn after the first rains but that was ages ago so im a bit confused, perhaps the cols front we had a week ago had something to do with it

Sorry but could not resist...

Guess you need to keep on casting cranks and loodkoppies at them or try Dion's popper tactics.

Deisel .... I'm also waiting for someone to answer your question.
I haven't been for almost a month now and can't wait to try for the 30KG bugger.

Reading this post I can't help but think fish are strange animals tho - they spawn and wanna have sex -

Now I wonder would you not be annoyed if U were "that busy" in the act and someone keeps on knocking at your door to open up ???

hehehehehe -

barbel as well as carp will spawn more than once a year if the conditions are fine - fresh new water enter the pond, especially after rains. Usually after the first rains, but often more than one time a season. Later spawnings usually less spawning fish. (Blue kurper do also spawn mre than once a season in ideal conditions) Usually not interested in feeding, especially not on natural bait. We often get barbel (and carp)on artlure during spawning. There are always a few fish getting hungry or aggresive during spawning. Usually catch the biggest speciemens during this time. However, most of them won't feed.

I have had my best Barbel sessions during spawning at Roodeplaat, they greedily take a rattletrap pulled along the bottom with a jerk action.
The best though is a plattie with a hook through its butt in the shallows, no sinker, no float, just a hook.
Hooking a big cat a meter or two in front of you is awesome fun. Hold on tight.
