The best barbel spot in the whole of SA is in Bloemhofdam! If you target big barbel i can promise you barbels of over the 20kg regurlary. If you want to know how to catch them contact me.

There are a lot of things involved to catch these monsters as you know.
The saying the bigger the bait the bigger the fish is very true in this case. The kind of tackle you use is also very important. I have used 400/3 fishing rod with 80lb braid 2 10/0 hooks inline and a grass carp of 1,5kg for bait. And then i could only land one out of 5 pick ups.

Best of Luck. Have ever try to use barble roepstokke and loodkoppe? We have good succes with artlure at Bloemhof.
Eventually ended up being four boats. But still between the four boats we landed close to 200 barbel on Saturday. Rain came on Saturday night and on Sunday morning it was still p!ssing down so we came home early. What a day on Saturday! No huge ones, the biggest being a couple in the 15-6kg mark. Majority were around 7-10kg, which was great fun on light tackle. Had triple ups on several time, it was chaos. Nost were caught on platies whilst drifting, but fish heads and even barbel fillets worked equally well. The guys did manage to hook into a few monsters, but could not land them. Will post some pics as soon as I gather all the photos from the guys.

LEKKERRR! If you can endure the weather at Bloemhof then you are in for good fish!
Small Barbel?? Some of the guys ran out of platties so they cut some strips from small barbel. Worked just about as well as the platties. On a few occaisions I pulled 5 or 6 barbel on one frog. It was almost mince the last few fish, but it still worked. Some guys even used frozen frogs from previous trips. Thaw them poke a few holes in it and they work just fine.
