Groot aas defnitief dis wat vir my werk en ook wat ek in my visvang loopbaan ondervind het kuns aas is goed maar weereens babers onder 15 kg
As jy kan karp van so 5kg tot 8kg amper heel aansit en plaas op plek waar jy dink die babers sal beweeg. Kleiner babers sal def van tyd tot tyd die aas rondsleep en ook lekker karnuffel maar dit alles help met die vangs van die groot baber Jy sal weet wanneer groot baber die aas optel Jy weet dit net Jou katrol sal goeie bewys wees
Dit is hoekom ek altyd se jou katrol en vislyn is die belangrikste ooit.
Onthou net vir groot baber is dit location location location en groot aas en ook aand is baie beter.

Im interested to know where to put the hooks in such a big bait and how? Im going to the lower Orange in November, during "donker maan" and want to try get a 25kg plus

Ek gebruik gewoontlik 1 groot hoek no10 of 12/0 ryg dit van agter die vis in en werk dit deur tot voor by die bek Waar jy hoek indruk en dan uittrek so vorder jy tot voor dan ook n sirkelhoek deur die vis se mond net so. Plain en simple Niks fancy nie dan ook voel ek dat glysinker vir mt goed werk.
Ek is nie goeie tekenaar nie Vra asb vir Skuimkop Ek het hom gewys hoe en sy sketse is pragtig Hoop jy kom reg

Lastly from a bait placement point of view, from what Ive read and seen is to put the bait in the slow,deep calm pools downstream from the rapids.
I have attached a pic and circled the areas, does it look right or would you place the baits somewhere else?

It looks like running water all over Its good means there are lots of fish especially smaller fish that swims around and makes excellent bait for the catfish I will go and sit at oosthuizens circle on the left and then also the right side of the circle will be good for big catfish.
Very difficult to judge on photo but that's what i will do. Try for very soft flowing water doesn't matter how deep. The catfish are there.
Specially at night i think it will be excellent.
Try also to get dead chicken from farms, its much bigger and also plattie will work and as always natural bait always the best.
Will use sliding sinker there
Other rod only big chicken on it, no sinker give chicken few cuts and put a stone inside , push it in, than chicken will go down.

Thank you for the advice Hennie. Just to be clear for anyone that's interested, the map in post 46 is Yellowfish Paradise below the barrage on the Vaal. Im going to give it a bash before we leave for the Orange to test all my rigs and fly gear. Will apply the same theory on the Orange, looking for the slower water below the rapids.
The same area from a different angle. The red dot in the left channel is where the previous photo was taken from. The yellow area on the right gave us some good cats last year but we are going to hit it harder this year. I also saw a few monsters while fly fishing off the sandbank against the reeds above the yellow circle. The circle was a deep shifting channel formed from the strong flow down the main channel on the right. Im going to target it this year with a much bigger bait.

Last year our biggest cats came out of this area, our guide got his PB of 30kg plus in this area a month before.
The red line is the rapids where we nymph and the yellow area on the right is where we placed our baits last year. On the right of the photo beneath the red arrow is a small rocky outcrop just before a channel . We fished off that rock and casted towards the mountain, we got hiding after hiding. Out of about 15 takes we only landed 2 fish as we had to pull them from the calmer water through the extremely strong flow and tons of structure. Much thicker leaders and whole fish as baits this year

Wat vir my werk by Krugersdrift dam is om hoener bloed te vries in n 2L coke bottel met 2 holes in die bottel vir slow release. Maak dit aan jou merker vas sodat as jy klaar ge Vis het weer kan uithaal en die dam skoon kan hou. Die bloed sal babers lok van orals af en vir jou baie sport besorg. Onthou net hoe groter jou aas hoe groter jou baber.
