StructureScan (Lowrance LSS-1) certainly do

Just to make sure we are up to speed:-

There is only one fish that is visible on the Left/Right/200 & 83kHz echos -

Which one is it and why?

Who knows why the fish appear as dots on the SideScan and arches on the 200 & 83kHz?

Something to do with the signal return ? No 'bounce back' from objects that is in a more 'horizontal' than 'vertical' position ? Or is it possibly fish getting picked up by an outgoing plus returning signal on the 83 & 200 while the LSS-1 only utilizes the sender signal ?

as ek hier uit die bus uit val, moenie worry nie.

ek leer nog en het net n elite 5 combo.

if i have it right the top left pic is the side scan. and it has a certain view lets say "all round" and all the fish is in it's ark, to be detected.

the 83khz cone angle is wider then the 200khz and therefore it would detect more.

the 200 khz cone is the smallest, and therefore only e is visible on it.

if i remember correctly, the 200khz is more used to find bottom and the 83khz is to detect baitfish etc.

het ek afgeval iewers?

Arches are created because the 200/83/50kHz sound wave is cone shaped.  The 200 will have smaller arches because of the smaller cone angle, and the 83/50kHz has an arch with longer tails because of the wider cone angle.

With StructureScan's 455 & 800kHz, the soundwave is shaped like a beam - i.e. wide from side to side, but very thin from front to back.  Therefore, the fish are in the beam for a very short period of time as the boat passes over the fish or the fish swim past the stationary boat.

janee, dis waar dit hoort.

so as far as i can understand is;
because of the cone size and shape, the fish apear to be dots.

the down side of side scan is with the rocking of the boat, which side scan does not want, would the images become distorted, if that is the correct word.

or wil you have simalar dots in the same area?

also, why is e on the outskirts, post 21 first pic, but in essence the fish was right underneath the boat?

1. Remember step 1 ... the water column (directly beneath the boat) is is split.

And because fish 'e' is DIRECTLY beneath the boat, the left AND right side scan beams can 'see' the fish.

On this day off Umkomaas, there was a 15knot NE blowing with 3 - 8ft choppy conditions.  To make it worse I was on my jetski.

In this image I am idling along a flat sea bottom just off the reef.  But in the DownScan view, the bottom appears to be very bumpy.  This is due to the surface swell / chop rising and dropping erratically in these conditions.

But what is important is how clear the shoal of small fish are even though the conditions are not ideal at all.

This was of the reef on the same day - not bad at all in my opinion, considering the conditions.

But unfortunately, SideScan isn't nearly as forgiving as DownScan in these choppy conditions.

This is a screenshot of the Produce wreck off Aliwal Shoal - you can still make out the wreck, even the bow section that broke off.  But it is very streaky when compared to DownScan.

thanks John.

recapping, post 21, first pic. the screen is split, ok does this mean, that the fish on the outskirts are then actually closer and the ones, that look closer are in fact further away?

i dont wanna get lost here.
also don't wanna screw up the tread.

as i understand it, there are 3 systems.

like the elite 5 with chart plotter 83/200khz better range on depth up to 300 meters

elite 5 dsi with chart plotter 455/800khz
better on finding fish but only to 76 meters

and then there is the side scan technology, does the dsi have sidescan?
is there a extra transducer or "what" that needs to be connected to the same unit, to give you the side scan ability.
(i remember on a picture bennie posted, the boat had a transducer with something else)

this is realy some good stuff.

i dont wanna get lost here. Go back and understand the first image 100% before even considering step 2.

as i understand it, there are 3 systems. Yes, there is sidescan, downscan and conventional sonar.

like the elite 5 with chart plotter 83/200khz better range on depth up to 300 meters  Yes

elite 5 dsi with chart plotter 455/800khz
better on finding fish but only to 76 meters  Yes

and then there is the side scan technology, does the dsi have sidescan? No, DSI means 'Down Scan Imaging' only.

is there a extra transducer or "what" that needs to be connected to the same unit, to give you the side scan ability. You will need one of the HDS units and the LSS-1 (StructureScan)

(i remember on a picture bennie posted, the boat had a transducer with something else)  You will have TWO transducers side by side - the LSS-1 and the Airmar P66 for example.

Hi Fishton,

Fantastic article! Thanks!

May I ask what the difference is between down scan and a traditional sonar? Besides the vastly greater detail of down scan, surley the two work in the same way?

Thanks,

Nic

at last a image that looks familiar, trying to figure this one out is a nightmare unless you stop the image and study that on the computer afterwards

so i'm lost, or it looks like it.

what is the difference between dsi downs scan imaging and conventional sonar?
what frequency does dis use?
