Had a scan through a PDF of the records, and it got me wondering.

They're listed under the categories LIGHT, MEDIUM and OPEN.
Does this refer to the line breaking strain, rod power - and what about your leader?

Other than having to belong to an artlure club, how do you register a record.
Is the scale at leagues calibrated and certified for record purposes.
What if you're fishing alone over a weekend, you catch a potential record fish far from any certified scale - can you still weigh it with your own scale.

Records are nice to have under your belt, but do these fish survive the whole weighing process to be safely released - a real moral dilemma ...

Light, medium and open refers to line class. Light is up to 6lb, medium up to 12lb and open is anything heavier than 12lb. Leader strength and rod power will also be filled in on your application form. Like you said you need to be affiliated with a club you will need to fill in 3 application forms, one for the club, provincial and national bodies (SAALAA). You will also need to send 3 samples of the line used to catch the record with each filled in form (think its 1m long each). The scale at leagues should always be calibrated at the start of a new season and will then suffice for record claiming. If you catch a record during a social, your scale needs to be calibrated. Take it to be ached and get a certificate, this needs to be done for each season. The forms will be available for download on our website http://www.norgalas.co.za/. You will require a witness of the fish being weighed that will need to sign on the form. Northern Gauteng have decided at our pre-agm to motivate club members to claim records again by rewarding club members. The board will decide on the value per record, the most deserving record holder will be rewarded with the first pull-away at our next league:fishn. If you want your catch to survive the ordeal and be able to claim it as a record you will need your calibrated scale and measuring tape on you while fishing. You must take all the measurements required by the form as quick as possible (also take pics with fish next to measuring tape and add a matchbox on the pic to indicate the fish's size in comparison to the matchbox). Then you need to weigh the fish, after weighing the fish you can revive and release the fish. I have claimed a few records that did not make it because I did not have a scale/measuring tape at hand, but I have also had the opportunity to claim records and release the fish (during internationals where the scale and measuring tape was close-by). So it all depends on if you are prepared and how quickly you can go through the procedure before releasing the fish. Hope this helps:fishn
